3 things:
- use a 'natural' brush if you can in your painting software, otherwise it will always look off (too digital) imo
- paint every plane (usually 3 at max, bg, mid and foreground) separately (on different layers), each with it's own value ranges - then bring them all together in the end
- always go from rough to detailed - start zoomed out and keep zooming in, adding more details, refining
These are the most important things for me, hope I could add something new/helpful
