Description
MayThe stallions had been traveling together for two weeks now. The fire had driven the mares far from the farm and now the stallions were doing whatever they could to track Jewel and Declan’s old herd. The two knew those mares, both having covered at least one of them in the past, so they chased them into the foothills, following their tracks. Once they had come to a fence, but the tracks had simply turned off onto a deer trail, so they followed still.
At last they caught sight of two light colored mares. Simplicity and Davina, who had just arrived back home after her first foal was weaned a month ago, grazed in a meadow near the creek. Both Highwayman and Declan saw them and hurried to claim them. They may have traveled in peace together as bachelors, but with mares involved only one could remain.
Declan lowered his head, ears pinned towards the mares. Startled by their sudden company, the two bolted off in different directions, joining back together behind the tobiano, right in front of Highwayman. The blue roan galloped between the mares and Declan, driving them farther away from his red and white rival before turning to face him.
The massive stallion snaked towards the chestnut, teeth bared, hooves lashing out. Declan had no choice but to run, trying to flee through the creek (which was more of a low river in this part). He bolted across the stones on the bed, slipping as they came loose beneath his back hooves for a moment. His blue rival followed, trotting along the edge and avoiding the loosest stones.
Defeated, the chestnut stallion hauled himself out of the water on the other side. The warm sun and cool breeze didn’t seem to matter to the handsome stallion. He’d lost part of his herd. As Highwayman herded his newly won mares away from the creek, Declan had nothing left to do but graze. With any luck, he would catch up with Clair and Aisling soon. Maybe he would even be able to find Jewel.

Highwayman was more than ready for the challenges a band stallion would face. He kept an eye on the area for predators (not that there really were any at noon in east Tennessee besides stray dogs) and other stallions seeking to claim his newly won harem. He turned to greet his mares, sniffing and nuzzling each one gently starting with Davina, his lead mare, and then Simplicity. Upon a quick sniff inspection, he found her in heat. He moved around to her backside, sniffing ever so gently, upper lip raised.
Gingerly, her began to heave himself onto her, but was surprised when she sidled out from under him. Although she’d been pastured with Declan before arriving at Wolf Creek Farm, it had only been for one winter, when he couldn’t have covered her. The maiden mare was unsure about the whole matter, stepping out from under Highwayman every time he tried to mount her. The next few hours he would spend coaxing her with long grazing breaks in between before he could finally cover her. The next few days of her estrus would be spent the same way.
Two days after winning his harem, Highwayman found yet another mare, this one wandering by herself. Jewel had been burned slightly by the flames, so she’d not been able to keep up with the others. Now on the mend, the dominant mare was back to her old self, ready to show her dominance over any other mares that dared challenge her. Driving his mares toward her, Highwayman whistled a greeting to her. The palomino lifted her head and trotted to join them, pinning her ears and pushing the other mares around. In that moment, Davina lost her role as lead mare to the solid gold Jewel.

Declan had scented her. He knew her scent from a mile away. Together, they’d produced three foals, one of which had watched the fire consume the barn simple weeks ago. The late May sun cut lines through the clouds, illuminating the hills the rays fell upon.
The stallion pushed on, grabbing mouthfuls of tender grass as he went. At the top of a rise her heard her, one of two sets of beating hooves. Clair, the one he’d scented, gallops behind Aisling, heels flying at a stray dog that had decided to try to make a meal out of the dark mares. In seconds Declan was there, chasing the hound away from his mares. He struck out with sharp front hooves. The tan feet found their mark, bringing the dog to the ground. The stallion trampled it, killing the threat to his herd before joining them. He nickered to them, greeting them happily. It had been far too long since he’d run with them.

Back at the farmhouse, Abby looked out on the pasture with a disconcerting silence. Star had meant so much to her. The first racer Wolf Creek Farm had ever trained, one of the best the track had ever known, was dead, her filly dangerously ill. The on-site vet was doing all he could with his new facility, but she just kept getting worse. All Abby had left was hope, and, like a candle running out of wick, it was slowly dying.
Star had meant so much to her. She’d been one of the best mares the young woman had ever known. The young woman simply lay down on her soft bed and wept quietly to herself, slowly drifting off to sleep.

With Abby too distraught to tend to the farm’s affairs, Queen’s next race was left to Daniel. He would go along with the plan Abby had been plotting since the Dubai World Cup. Queen was headed for the Triple Crown.
With the Derby Trial Stakes and the Dubai World Cup both easily under her belt, Queen was the easy favorite with Venger right behind her. The team was a little nervous as the horses loaded. Venger had had a nice break before coming here and Queen had just come off the Derby Trial Stakes. We’d see how they fared on the track.
As the gates opened, a full field lunged for the lead. The massive chestnut colt in the gte next to queen broke crocked, slamming his bulk into her. She stumbled, but recovered. The field was far out in front of her and Queen was surging forward, trying to get to her comfortable position in front. Harry eased her up to a pace that would slowly chew away the distance.
Venger was in second and moving up as they entered the far turn. That was when Queen had had enough of being in back. Watching from her bedroom television set, Abby saw the filly’s ears pin and her tail raise. Then, using the turn to propel her, she took off faster than one would have though possible. She gobbled the field, eyes focused on the palomino Venger. She inhaled the distance between them, quickly working her way up to him as the wire loomed ever closer. She lunged forward, flinging her tail straight up in the air with the effort. Flank, belly and shoulder were consumed by Queen’s long fluid stride and she drew nose to nose with the colt. Then she defiantly shoved her nose in front as they blew by the wire.
Queen had snatched the first Jewel of the Crown.

With millions added to the farm bank account in the first five months of the year, Abby could now pay for help. She searched through her list of numbers for anyone she thought could help. She called farm owners she’d come to call friends, spreading the news about Wolf Creek Farms need for horses and riders. There would be a round-up to bring the horses back to the farm. All it would take was a few more seasoned horses and riders to help contain and drive the herds home. And there would be a reward for the help.

So, now you know what has happened with the ISHs. Each month of this season you'll find out about not only the racers, but the now semi-wild herds.
Anyone interested in doing a mini-RP and helping to bring home the roaming horses, please get in touch with me soon. I do have a set month for starting the bringing in.
