Description
Finally I finished my lectures and is able to get back to some of my personal works.Another project at hand, over here is a concept of affordable mass produce Unmanned Heavy Infantry Support Mech. The mech features a easy to transport design and also an easy to assemble parts that can be easily set up by a single battlefield engineer in just 20 minutes flat. In addition the parts on the mech can be easily swapped with existing or prebuilt weapons / parts to increase flexibility on combat for both the infantry and the mech needs.
The original Variant-C is equipped with multiple apps/parts that prioritize the survival of the surrounding humans under its care. The software is design to literally consider the mech as more as an expandable asset and will puts itself in harms way and act as a last resort shield/bait in the worse case scenario. Even unmanned the Variant C can be easily controlled with a secure mobile device within its escort group. In a scenario of an attempt hacking, The OS can be easily pull out from an emergency panel by and engineer to forcibly shut down the mech before it becomes a threat. After that It can be linked up manually with a cable to still move the mech and control it manually via the mobile device.
Variant-C sports an array of complex multi sensors / optics, and a unique backpack that can create a distortion bubble that will affect all form of optics sensors as large as 450 m. The bubble will obstruct most nightvision, thermal and FLIR and protect its troops as long they stay within it. This will force the enemy into a direct visual acquisitionΒ and render all its aiming aid ineffective.
For weapons in the Variant-C, its sport a 50mm auto grenade launcher with an effective range of 800m and 600 grenades per drum for the right arm. The left arm houses twin 50 cal. Heavy Machine guns for suppression purposes, with 3000 rounds. For defensive, the rear of the right arm can delopy a shield that is highly durable, and a left shoulder mounted shield that can be used as a spare or be independently deployed by the infantry troops and mount a weapon to become an armoured turret set up. Hidden within its left shoulder is a deployable missile decoy system that will attempt to jam and interfere missile systems. They decoys can also launch a limited amount to flares and chaffs to increase the chances. The right shoulder houses a smoke screen mechanism, the smoke screen capsule can mixed with different chemicals to change its effect and function depending on the mission needs.
On top of the rear right shoulder is equipped with a compact Laser Anti Munitions Systems unit design to intercept explosive type munitions especially from artillery and bombing runs too a certain degree.
The Variant-C is also a walking logistic and utility mech that can carry extra supplies for infantry units. For mobility the legs has a deployable Wheel system that allows long distance high speed travels in between mission.
Well this is a completed work, sorry I have not coloured this piece, yet but I'm gonna need to catch up with some works here and there from my buddies in DA so I will look into colour this in the future. As for now is a finished piece so enjoy.

Thank you, means a lot coming from a more experience mecha artist.

That's a stunning design and top notch. Love it

Question what function do the long, upward pointing extensions at the front feet perform? Are they deployed on soft terrain to spread out ground pressure?

dlredscorpion In reply to Baron-Engel [2015-10-15 17:38:51 +0000 UTC]
Yup, that would be the purpose for that design. Behind the extension are smaller interlinked deployable part that can use to spread the size of the mech feet in an event that it need to traverese through soft sands or snow.Β
Those part also can be moved downwards under the feet of the mech to be used like skiis with the support of the wheels device in snow conditions. The whole extension piece can be removed if there no need for them, but you can say they can double as shields for the important parts of the feet mechanism.

Well except for the possibility of them getting caught amongst rubble and undergrowth, and every system is a series of compromises, it is nice to see someone considering the issue of ground pressure in mech designs! Recently seems to have been fashionable to give mechs these tiny, peg-like feet that would sink into anything other than reinforced concrete. Need to take a better look at your gallery.

Yeah i know what you mean .. im generally the old school kind of RR mech designers, those that grow up with the old AC, Labors, Mobile Suits, well you know the 80's mech. Where its more of how they can work rather than looks.Β
So yeah thanks and feel free to browse around.

Nice work. Really dig the structural design.
Is this done as a 3D model??

Well not very sure yet ? so far its a concept linework done with PS. I might give the big guy a whirl in Maya once i renew my license.

Wow, amazing. I thought it was done with a 3D program!!!
Something like SketchUp.Β
Might be the shading, or colours.
I'm not really great with that, but... nice!

Haha Thanks, lot of ppl tell me that too, with the Sketch Up feel that is.Β

Holy shit! I love this so much! Feel like maybe I saw the unshaded lines at some point. Awesome design, in the style I really enjoy (wish that sci-fi movies and pop media did mechs more like this) and the infantry are cool too. Also dig what you did w/ the background.
The payload data sounds awesome. Feels like the concept is ready to pitch for Boston Dynamics! Especially like the visual systems distortion field. In an era of drones, and advanced infantry optics, it's an essential countermeasure. And forcing line of sight conflict almost makes me pity the opponent.Β

I shall quote of one off my close mecha buddy words, "in the ever breakneck growing speed of technology of war, we gotta give the Groppo's some love"Β
After all behind all machine, there is a man and that man is still vunerable. And i still a strong believer no matter how automated or smart an AI would ever become, the judgement of a man is still needed in many situations.
Plus from many movies and documentaries, many times a poor quick assault platoon gets wiped out too easily when they are unfortunate enough to run into tanks, light armours and snipers, Just because they are not equipped enough to handle those encounters.
Would make a lot sense to create a large fully automated mech to both shield , take down and automatically become the biggest threat within the group so they enemy will not immediately decide to pick off the humans troops first.
A tank, abliet a good shield and packing great firepower, would be to cumbersome and loud too keep up with the infantry, while a sniper cant really do much against hard target, that where this mech can fill the role of all the mentioned above, while agile enough to keep up with the ground troops.
---------
I realize modern weapons optics are so heavily reliant of visual aid sensors, and heavily inspired by one of mythbuster episode, where there tried to counter thermals optics with creating cloud of cold blast from fire extinguisher discharge. And it worked surprisingly.
So i thought, why not a jammer that counters all those function? Well as long you are in that bubble.Β

All sound very plausible and tactically pragmatic. Being automated or "ap controlled" opens up interesting possibilities for scale and construction. Nice not to worry about a human body in there. Bigger than power armor but smaller than the minimal scale for piloted wanzer or labor. Just the right size for portability and serious payload capacity.Β
The mobile wheel mode reminds me a bit of D-Walker! Β

Yeah wanted a mech that can be easily loaded or pulled along with the convo trucks, or air dropped in via choppers. As easily like those arty pieces.
Hahaha spot on the wheel part. But then again that is the most workable design that is simple and cost effective. Like they say - "If it ain't broken, don't fix it" XD
