I suppose, were Light not an optimist, he wouldn't have fallen this far. Pessimism is probably handy when you're handling a killer notebook and butting heads with the world. Who knows how many lives would have been spared if Light thought: "What IF I failed, went insane with power, and ended up killing everyone I ever cared about?!"
