Hey guys, Duke here ! For the first deviation of this page, I decided to redo a "I like this character" meme. It took me quite some time to think about the characters I wanted to put in each and every slot and thinking about what I would write about them but it's finally done. Now I will be talking about some of my favorite characters and why I like them.Just a heads up, there will be some spoilers for some of these franchises. You've been warned.
**************************
I like this character because :
They’re interesting : Van Hoheiheim (Fullmetal Alchemist) :
Van Hoheiheim stands out for being one of the most fascinating and tragic characters of Fullmetal Alchemist. We get an interesting backstory where he started off as a slave called ‘number 23’ whom the king of the country of Xerxes chose for an alchemical experiment which involved taking some of the slave’s blood. This experiment gave birth to a creature kept in a flask named Homunculus or ‘The Dwarf in the Flask’ who gave the young slave the name ‘Van Hoheiheim’ and even tutored him as a sign of gratitude. This allowed Hoheiheim to gain status and enough influence to climb up the ranks of Xerxes and this also allowed the man to dream about his hope to start a family, which he thought wouldn’t be possible for him. Soon afterwards, the king of Xerxes requested the knowledge of the dwarf inj order to make him immortal. However, Homunculus tricked the king which led to the genocide of the people of Xerxes, expect Hoheiheim, whom he granted eternal life and an ageless body with the souls of the thousands of people killed during the immortality ritual, turning him into a living Philosopher’s Stone.
This traumatic event led him to think of himself as a sinful monster until he met Trisha who encouraged Hoheiheim to embrace his life and eventually, they started a life and a family together, giving birth to the two main protagonists of the series, Edward and Alphonse Elric. However, despite accomplishing what he wanted since he was a slave, this made fearful of the prospect of seeing his loved ones grow old and perish without him, so much so that he began to fear touching his own children due to his belief that he could curse them. After discoveing that Homunculus plans to become a God by turning every single inhabitant of Amestris into Philosopher’s Stones, Hoheiheim decided to leave his family and travel the world to stop this catastrophe for the sake of his beloved ones and all of his dear friends while promising to Trisha that they would die together. It’s just amazing to see this character who started as a nobody turning into a self-conflicted immortal man atoning for his actions and seeing him finally at peace with himself is truly a satisfying conclusion to his character !
They’re cool : Satsuki Kiryuin (Kill La Kill) :
Starting off as the main antagonist of the first half of the series, Satsuki is a cold, calculating woman who have absolute authority over Honnoji Academy and is regarded as its ruler by many. Just like Ryuko, she also a revealing combat suit but unlike her, she’s not ashamed of wearing it, which is pretty badass. Another thing that makes Satsuki badass is how strong she is, not just physically but also mentally, as she had to put up with her mother (who will be the main villain of the second part) sexually abusing her since her childhood. But even then, she is not afraid to stand up against her and just like Ryuko, she’s one of the coolest and most badass warrior ladies I’ve seen in any medium !
Their character makes sense : Raven (Teen Titans) :
Born with potentially destructive powers tied with her feelings and emotions, Raven is very cautious of it. As such, she adopted a stoic and emotionless facade and demeanor as to not let her powers active witout her will and destroy everything and everyone around her. Even though she has complete control over her powers, there are times where her emotions take the best of her as she would have killed Dr. Light if her friends didn’t stop her fury. Despite her cold and brooding face, she does show a lot of emotions throughout the show, which makes her a believable and multi-faceted character.
They have flaws : Aang (Avatar : The Last Airbender) :
Since he has been announced that he is Avatar, Aang has to deal with a lot of pressure and responsibility at a very young age. This led him to be a lonely kid as the other children of the Air Nomads no longer wanted to play with him. After freezing himself and his companion Appa during a storm, Aang met Katara and Sokka, with who he becomes very attached to. At this point, Aang has considered the two siblings like a family, so much so that the idea of them being separated from him is painful to him. This kid has been through so much things in his life such as seeing that his people has been exterminated by the Fire Nation, which causes him to have enormous guilt because he could have prevented this. Despite all of this, Aang has dedicated his life to protect the world and everything he holds dear.
They’re smart : L (Death Note) :
One defining trait of L is his high intellect, so much so that he became the greatest detective of the world at a young age. While investigating the case of criminals being killed by Light Yagami, aka Kira, he was able to deceive him by having death row inmate Lind L. Tailor posing as him. His relationship with Light/Kira is what makes him the perfect opponent as both characters are highly intelligent with the mind games, the dialogues and the ambigious relationship between these two. L is also very careful about his identity, as he never shows his face to the world and represents himself by a capital L as a safety measure. L truly made Death Note thrilling, it was truly sad to see Kira being two steps ahead of him and eliminating him for good.
They’re misunderstood : Asgore Dreemurr (Undertale) :
Asgore gets a lot of misjudgements. He’s often portrayed as a despotic and cold-hearted monster while he’s far from that. I mean yes, he took away human souls but this was the only way to set the monsters free. Asgore has gone through so much things in his life. He lost his biological son and adopted child, which led to declare a war against humans in a fit of anger. His wife Toriel divorced him, thinking he has gone too far. He also has the pressure of all his kingdom on his back since he is the only one who can set his people free from the Underground. Asgore is a genuinely nice guy, even to the main protagonist Frisk. Heck, even the idea of killing them in order to claim their soul disgusts him !
They’re an archetype : Po (Kung Fu Panda) :
Po is a great example of the ‘Chosen One’ archetype. While he is the Dragon Warrior, he isn’t very strong or has any special abilities at first but after a harsh training from Master Shifu, he is able to unlock his potential in kung fu and defeating tough opponents such as Tai Lung, Shen and Kai while using his skills and ingenuity and learning important life lessons such as the fact that ‘there is no secret ingredient’ to become the Dragon Warrior and inner peace to come to terms with his tragic past and no let it define who he is. Another thing that makes Po great is that is never arrogant and power-hungry like his enemies, quite the opposite actually. He is good-natured, goofy, determined, selfless when it comes to protecting the people around him, humble, light-hearted and even shows compassion and mercy towards his enemies such as Shen as he tried to reason with him despite being the one who caused him so much pain. Now that’s a character I can only admire !
I can relate : Legoshi (Beastars) :
When I was watching Beastars, I was like « Wait a second. Legoshi is just like me ! ». There are a lot of moments in the show where I ended up seeing myself in him – a socially awkward loner who generally downplays himself around other people ? Check. Tall ? Check. Comes off as inexpressive at first ? Check. Self-hating ? Check. Tall and quite imposing physically ? Check. Stubborn and impulsive at time ? Check. Aside from being an anthromorphic wolf in love with a dwarf rabbit, Legoshi is a character that really clicks with me on a personal level.
They have redeeming qualities : Sarge (Red vs Blue) :
The commander of the Red team comes off as a egocentrical man who never acknowledged the faults in his plans, as illogical as they often are, and seems to have a deep hatred for the lazy private Grif who he seems to hate the fact that he even exists. However, when the situation calls for it, Sarge displays qualiites of a true military leader. For example, after finding that the Red vs Blue war was nothing but a simulation, Sarge motivates the troops (even Grif) with a bold speech. Although they’re still conflict in their relationship, Sarge has come to respect Grif throughout the entire show.
They’re honest : Jean-Pierre Polnareff (Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure : Stardust Crusaders) :
I think the chivalrous and flitartous Frenchman fits the spot because he said that he’s joining Jotaro and the others to avenge his late sister from a man with two right hands. When he heard that the man was around Calcutta, Polnareff decided to leave the group because the only reason he joined the group is that he can kill the man who killed his sister. Also, despite arguing with Advol about him leaving to fight on his own, Polnareff mourned openly when Advol seemingly died in battle, making him the most compassionate and expressive man of the group. On top of that, he has a sense of honor and as such, he’s against using dirty and cheap tactics to win a fight.
They’re nice : Caeda (Fire Emblem Shadow Dragon) :
The princess of the small kingdom of Talys is one of the sweetiest characters in the entire series. She is able to convince some enemies to fight on Marth’s side like the cold swordsman Navarre. She can also be cunning and manipulative but her kindness and friendliness are her stronger abilities. She also cares a big deal about the members of the Altean army such as her retainer and mercenary Ogma whom he saved from whipping when she was just a child and her fiancé Marth, to whom she’s very protective. Despite him wishing her to stay out of the battlefield, she insists on fighting by his side instead of sitting idly by and doing nothing. Marth is realy lucky to have such a pure-hearted and loving woman.
Of subtext : Tomura Shigaraki (My Hero Academia) :
While watching My Hero Academia, I noticed that there are a lot of parallels between Shigaraki, the main antagonist, and Deku, the main protagonist, as the former is supposed to be a dark reflection of the latter. Like Midoriya, Shigaraki starts off with a big deal of responsibility on his back as he’s to become the new face of evil, just like how Deku has to become the new symbol of peace. His journey has him learning from his mistakes and growing from them and maturing in the same manner as Midoriya. While Deku is tutored by the number one superhero All Might, Shigaraki is striving to be the succesor of the most dangerous and threatening supervillain of the society, All For One. It’s really interesting to see these two characters sharing so many similarities, despite being on opposite sides as the story not only focuses on how Deku became the greatest superhero but also on how Shigaraki possibly became the greatest supervillain.
Of their hatedom : Paul (Pokémon Diamond and Pearl) :
Paul is a character that seems to get his fair share of hate. This ranges from people saying that he’s a mean-spirited jerk to people claiming that he faces little to no consequences. To the former, I have to say, that’s the point ! Paul is meant to be the antithesis to Ash, as the latter is a good-natured and friendly trainer who cares a lot about his Pokémon, while Paul is the opposite – mean, hostile, uncaring and only values power over bonds. In my eyes, that makes him one of the (if not the) most interesting rival Ash ever had to encounter. As for the latter criticism of Paul, I get where people are coming from, but I still have to rebut this argument by saying BRANDON ! His fight against Brandon has him getting his ass handed to him by the latter’s Regi’s. Paul isn’t completely irredeemable either as after his defeat against Ash in the Lily Valley Conference, Paul gained a lot of respect for Ash, ending their bitter rivalry in a satisfying conclusion.
They’re underrated : Razer (Green Lantern : The Animated Series) :
Now here’s a example of a redeemed villain that I don’t see talked very often (also mostly due to the fact that this show is not very notorious). Razer is a nice example of the trope as he is a man overwhelmed by vengeance after his city – in the planrt Volkreg – including his home, in ruins along with his wife Ilana dead. This filled him with so much anger that Atrocitus took advantage of him and made him a member of the Red Lantern Corps. In his mission to kill Green Lantern Shyir Rev and destroy his home planet, Razer and his fellow Red Lantern Zox are intercepted by Green Lantern Hal Jordan and Kilowog. Razer goes after Jordan, almost managing to defeat him. Razer went to Shyir Rev’s planet and the latter saw that deep down ; he isn’t a bad person before his death. After that, Razer was captured by the Green Lantern and Razer, remorseful for his actions, begged Hal and Kilowog to kill him. Instead, he was imprisoned in the Interceptor and deprived of his Red Lantern ring.
Shortly after that, he was sent to the Spider Guild prison, where he is forced to relive his worst memories – including the death of his wife – Ilana before the Green realized that the Spider Guild used torture methods on their inmates and busted him out of it. This is where Razer’s redemption begins. Hal gave Razer’s ring back and requested him on their mission to stop the Red. It takes some for Razer to prove to the others, espacially Kilowog, that he’s a trustworthy member of the team. He will also have to learn to control his rage, as to not endanger his comrades. Razer is an amazing character and redeemed villain that I feel doesn’t get as much recognition as he should.
They changed for the better : Ryu Terui/Kamen Rider Accel (Kamen Rider W) :
At first, Ryu was a very cold and unfriendly rider who sought revenge against the one who killed his family who is later revealed to be Shinkuro Isaka, also known as the Weather Dopant. He was also shown to despise the city of Futo, due to it being the source of the Gaia Memories and thus the source of numerous criminal activities and went as far as almost killing criminals after he received his Accel Driver and Gaia Memory from the mysterious figure Shroud, to the point where he almost killed the wrong criminal with the same freezing powers as Isaka.
However, during his time with the Narumi Detective Agency, he starts to slowly mellow as his vengeful nature fades away after defeating Isaka to the point of him becoming selfless and compassionate, desiring to protect Futo, overall a complete 180 from his initial personality. He also has funny moments such as when he yells « Don’t ask me any questions !! » at the end of an episode or when he forced himself to kiss someone (Shotaro being the main victim) just to perfect his kissing for a romantic scene in a movie.
I CAN : Peter Parker/Spider-Man (Marvel Comics) :
It’s your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man and there are so many reasons why I love him but I'll try to keep it brief. He's one of the most human and relatable superheroes as he has to manage his daily life as Peter Parker and his superhero business as his alter-ego Spider-Man. His adventures has him mature throughout multiple experiences such as learning that 'With great power comes responsibility' as Uncle Ben taught him and since then has become his motto. Spidey is a great source of inspiration to me as he went through a lot but despite that, he never gives in, and that is truly admirable !

I see you're a man/woman of culture, as well.
Okay in all seriousness, Polnareff has always been my favorite character in Jojo, next to Joseph, Josuke, Koichi, Okuyasu, and of course: Speedwagon.
Not sure if you know this, and this MIGHT be a slight spoiler, but I'm glad he came back in Golden Wind!
