Description A before and after look at one of my oldest paintings redone in my new style ten years later. The original painting had started to deteriorate and would need varnishing to save. Before varnishing it, I decided to give the piece a bit of new life. The right version is obviously the end result.

Thank you! I'm most self taught. I just started staring at classical portraiture and things just started to make sense to me.Ā

Well, if you look at my earlier version, it wasn't very good at all. That was over a decade ago. I was just using paints without a care for technique and brushwork. It wasn't until I started experimenting and understanding other artists that I tried to break my personal painting habits and see what else I could do. Honestly, I'd probably do much better and much faster if I just took the chance to take classes. Otherwise, I'm learning very slowly with what materials I find on my own.Ā

Dang, you impress me every time you step up to the plate. It's fun to see an artist return to an old piece and redo it in such an updated fashion that better reflects their current ability. I wish I could even produce what you did ten years ago, but that progress on the right is undeniably beautiful tenfold. You've learned to incorporate light and shadow and create a sense of depth to the composition as well as add dimension to the characters you illustrate. It also makes me happy to hear you make an honest effort to preserve your old work because I think it's important for artistic history to stay accessible and show how far one has come since. Very nice!

Thanks man. That piece had been on my mind for ages, because as my gallery grew and the newer pieces were going up, that piece had managed to stay on display the longest, despite newer pieces being able to take over its place. I dunno why, but it seemed wrong to put it aside, but I also knew it didn't fit in any longer. The fact that it was deteriorating seemed to give me the impression that I either had to give it up and set it aside or give it a new breath of life. I'm glad I went with the latter.

Absolutely my pleasure, dude. Sometimes you need to take a look back at your past to get motivation for your future. Delving back into that part of your creative history can be a fun experience, and you tend to put into perspective more exactly what you've learned along the way. Helps to really see the bigger picture from a visual standpoint and allows you to appreciate the progress you've made when you can compare and see it with your own eyes. It's great you care that much to preserve whatever you can of your past, as I wholeheartedly recommend it to other artists to do the same with their own work on occasion.

Speaking of looking back into the past, I didn't think it would come back to haunt me in the form of that user nipple on Ninfora. That guy tried to bully me around Nsider2 few years back before he got banned. Not just on art, but on almost everything thing I posted.Ā
