Attila class fast attack craft were one of the first warships developed by Martians. Originally they were used as defensive vehicles, able to respond quickly and effectively discourage incursions by smaller craft that didn't require attention from larger ships. Later on, they were placed near important off-world installations, again to provide a fast response unit.

Their construction is very simple, relying on aged and robust technologies, which made it possible to field them in large numbers and easily maintain them when not in use. Their Electrothermal-chemical guns are a long shot from capital ship EM cannons, but still potent enough to launch projectiles at speeds close to 4km/s, which was enough to easily punch holes in all but the most armored ships. The need to get in short ranges to effectively use their weapons was risky, leaving them vulnerable against some opponents. To mitigate this risk, they are covered with spaced Armour panels, giving them some survivability, and while their maneuverability is somewhat sluggish, they possess excellent acceleration, with their propulsion providing a perfect cover on their behinds. Four of the smaller ETC guns are supposed to act as a CIWS, and as such are placed on gimbaled ship section, so each ship can orient its configuration depending on current conditions, be it a completely frontally focused firepower, a broadside, or whatever is needed. Internally they are very cramped, with only 80 cubic meters of pressurized space, meaning they can't be used on longer duration missions.

Fueling them is costly, and securing locations with large reserves of nuclear material was paramount, and one of the driving factors in early Martian expansionism, claiming asteroids with relevant materials. While they were quick to launch into action, docking them was somewhat troublesome, since even after stopping their main engine, several hours had to pass before the radiation levels came to secure levels. For the same reason, only specially adapted ships could carry them.

They were once again used in the war with the Jovians, carried in threes internally on Tamerlane class battlecruisers. Even though nearly ancient designs by that time, they were excellent when dealing with large numbers of smaller craft used by Jovians, something larger ships occasionally had issues, wastefully expending high grade weaponry on low grade targets. For that particular conflict, their internals were refitted, and an additional guided missile variant was developed. As they were usually used in groups of 3, two leading ones would be classic kinetic variants, and the third one would be the guided missile variant, covering them and giving them the opportunity to close in.
