This is me in front of my older work. Like, last year old. I changed my palette to a darker one. It feels better to me. There was always something unpleasant about my older works. They seemed to lack that painterly "something". Whatever... Just know that I am still not satisfied with what I have made, but also know that it is the reason that I keep painting.Related content

What you describe is a lot of how I feel. I am having trouble getting to the palette that suits me, and for that reason I'm not exactly happy with my colored work. I feel limited to these brighter colors, and I wonder why my black and white stuff feels so good until it is colored. I feel tortured by this.

Dear Doc Hammer,
Hi, my name is Michael Joseph Sauvageau and I think you are the man. I am a senior at the University of California Riverside and my major is studio art with an emphasis on oil painting. I have a man crush on you ( and so does my girlfriend), the venture brothers has been my favorite show for sometime now, I think your band is bitchin!, and when I saw your series of saints painting's I couldn't help but wonder how cool a sitcom based based on you traveling back in time and becoming friends with Rembrandt and Jacque-Louis David would be. Needless to say, I think you are tearing ART a new asshole, which is what I'de like to do sooner than later as well. I am currently in a intermediate drawing class in which I have a paper due in 2 weeks on a artist that I admire (that would be you). My proposal to you is, is there anyway I can interview you (send you 10-20 questions via email) sometime before the 5th of December which I could use in my previously mentioned paper on you for my drawing class?
I hope the answer will be, " Sure, asshole I wil allow you a peak into the awesome factory that is my mind ", but either way I am still going to watch the venture brothers religiously.

For my Thesis project I am making a triptych inspired by Otto Dix and it is going to be composed of 3 canvases (each one is 3ft by 7ft, and yes I made the stretchers and stretched the canvas myself), and in the middle canvas I am going to include the Monarch in the composition. Do I have your blessing?

I like your older work. I like your new work, mind you, but it has a different atmosphere, so it's interesting.
There's so much intensity in the eyes and faces of your painted women they feel alive. Now out of curiosity I'd love to see you paint them smiling and with lighter colors, just to see the difference.
This is very beautiful work. Oh, and since I can't possibly comment on all your works here, I'll just add, because I read some other comment you made, that you're not supposed to be satisfied with your own work. If you were, you'd be stalling and rotting. I just hope you get to sleep. Insomnia is just plain unbearable.

It's noticeably lighter than your newer works, but I think it suits the subject of the painting. (She reminds me somewhat of Poison Ivy; never a bad thing.) To me, what makes this specific shot interesting to look at is the lightness of the composition meeting the darkness of your wardrobe and downcast expression. The clash of the light and dark, whether intentional or not, is a great underlying theme in this. :]
Also, the subject in the upper left of the shot glancing enviously at the foreground is humorous, hahaha.

For some reason, when I see this photo all I can think of is the song "Goodbye hooooorses! Im crying over yoooooooou!" from Silence of the Lambs playing in the background and you telling some girl "It rubs the lotion on its skin, it does this whenever its told.". HAHA! Dude your awesome!

I'm glad you have moved on from that style, that sort of thing is pretty common. It's encouraging when someone achieves "crowd-pleasing" but doesn't rest there.

wow...that model looks just like my best friend Nikki! I must admit, I am a person who leans towards color...and I love the contrast of the red hair and green ribbons...sort of reminds me of this art deco poster I have on my wall that I bought for the same reason. It is excellent work. But I can understand why you wouldn't want to look back. People change over time, and it shows best in their artwork. There are so many pieces that I would never even show anyone.
Heh, the resemblance to my friend is astounding, hmm maybe she has a double life I'm not aware of...

I hope you haven't destroyed these paintings too! I do agree in general with your unsentimental ideology of using every painting as a practive for the next and to learn and improve etc. I admire your integrity and drive, don't get me wrong... However I don't think you should completely reject your past output as it does have value. An artist can so easily delude himself that he is improving by moving from one style to another when all that has really changed may be what emotional elements of art he prefers and prioritizes because of the pahse of life he is in. Just because his earlier stuff communicated a different mood and that means less to him now, it doesn't diminish its quality or worth.

Yes. Ya see, I have my methods. They work for me, and I'm not about to debate or defend them anymore. I'm sure you have heard of far more ridiculous methods that painters employ to get to "that place". Destroying the occasional unfinished, or unsuccessful painting is hardly anything new or wacky. It's just part of the way I do things.

the red head looks so great tho! her hair is kickass! haha, i think i saw your work on a small pamphlet that i got from the school im transferring to, the academy of fine art in philly. the picture was this overhead shot of a usartists exhibit showing u bunch of cubicle-like walls with all of these paintings hung up. i glanced over it at first but then i spotted what i thought was number 49 in the bottom right. i was like,"no way! i know who that dude is!" haha, small world. if you don't have it, ill send you the pamphlet, ya know, just so you can show it off to your friends and assure them that you're quasi-famous, haha.

For some reason on a dull Friday morning I finally decide to stop lurking and post a comment on one of your pages.
Your "older work" seems more modern (I know that can be a dirty word) than your "new" work. The colours being brighter makes it very clean and elegant and although still amazing, your "darker palette" seems to have more depth. I like this photo because I think there's something in your expression about the paintings behind you - as if you know they're competently outstanding, but lacking a deeper expression. That deeper expression has broken through in your Saints series - and it's not just the darker colours, there's something more. You've given depth and power to simple, beautiful things.
For some reason I wanted to let everyone know that I'm faving this for the photo itself and not really the art behind it. I want to selfishly keep it as a reminder that we *need* to strive for better things. But then again, what the hell do I know, I'm just a fan

That painting in the background definitely has a different mood than your newer stuff, which to me seems more mysterious and somehow holy looking....must be the halo effects you do around the sitter's head. I do like this painting here though, the hair is amazing.

I actually like that painting at the front, the Halo is a great concept and the red and green shades contrast together nicely.

Were you ever into or have you ever gotten into anything like Charcoal-esq? With all the shading and such with the paint(one thing i was never able to do with oil) i think you'd be pretty good at it

From what I can see of it, I say you should give your old work more credit. I understand it may not feel right to you anymore, but it's still a hell of a lot better than the majority of the population here could do. Remember that. As for the darker palette you've adopted, it may also be a phase your muse is leading you through. All your works are just footsteps on the path to the artist you really want to be.

That's great work there doc. I was tricked by the painting close to you. In the thumbnail it looked like a real woman, just farther behind you. If that's not a compliment on your style I don't know what is.

I don't think not, I believe that the principal objective of an artist must be never be totally HAPPY of what is doing at the moment, causez the point that make us get bigger is the desire of want more.

Your English is absolutely fine. And may I say that it is made even better by its comparison to my almost nonexistent Spanish. So... I get your point, and I feel exactly as you do. The drive to fly past your limitations is one of the great engines of art. Self-loathing (when tempered by a strong sense of purpose) is a perfect fuel for that "engine".

I guess this has become a cliche'd comment, but I think those paintings with the description of 'old' are lovely, I think their captured expressions are the best part. I also love the eyes done on the frontmost one. Beautiful...
