Description
13.5" x 11", oil all up on the canvas' junk... (I wanted to put a "yo" after that, but I pussied out)Here is the other portrait I had going during the completion of the larger work (Saint No.35)
I am in constant battle with drying times (welcome to oil painting!). So... I have to work on two paintings at a time. That way, when one is just too wet to work (safely), I can just turn around to my second easel and keep painting. Although it is an efficient solution to my workaholic psychosis, it takes time out of my social life. And you can't underestimate the importance of friends and lovers in the sanity of painters. But, I always can find a way to sneak out of being a functioning human being.
As for the model... Just look at that beautiful girl! But you have leaned too much about my sad life... Ya got me at a vulnerable time here I guess. So, I should just say that she is important to me. Please... Be kind to me... I have to start two paintings now, and you guys know what a bitch that is. Never easy, ya know? Just never easy.
People ask "why" we do it. But it is always "how do" we do it
NOTE: Detail of this in my SCRAPS

You know, writing is supposed to be my thing and I can't even find a way to describe your work. This could either mean that I'm an awful writer or that you're an incredible artist. Let's go with the latter...

I have to say...you deserve so much recognition than you get. I know someone who makes websites for a living and if you are interested he would be willing to make you one for free. Not a venture Brothers one but one soley showcasing your artwork and YOU as a person.

Awe-stirring work. I really appreciate the depth and value. I'm sure you captured something I struggle with when painting. The essence of the character. <3

good painting. the eyes are what got my attention in this painting. I really like them. overall composition seems a little dark, but i think it works. i also think that movie about killer sheep is an excellent concept, so really what i think has no bearing on reality. great painting.

I like this piece because of it's uniqueness. In most of the work in your gallery, the model is not looking directly at the viewer. Your work is so realistic, that when the subject is looking at me, I feel entranced. Woo!

It's odd, I don't even see a painting when I look at this. I just see a question in her eyes and the knowledge that the answer will hurt, and that she thinks i'm a fool for not understanding why.
I don't know whether to marvel at her or cry. She's magnificent.

just amazing detail on the eyes, I was staring at it when it was in your scraps, you made her look so cute! I really wanna just steal your secrets because it's so well done, but you probably don't want to go through all of your process with me, so I just have to keep watching you then!

I like this very much. +fav The shadow on the right of her face is intruiging... you are patient if you worked in natural light. Moving natural light can be a bitch sometimes
Thanks for sharing your stuff its awesome

No... I pull down the shades and work with controlled lighting. Natural light changes too much and it makes you stop painting by 5:00.

I too have nailed byself in a coffin of self indulgence of paint. I don't really know how to socialize so I spend most of my time painting. This is really beautiful; It is smooth yet not. I like the texture you have.

Thanks... It's a fairly rough surface [link] This is the only painting that I kinda felt bad about when it sold. You can't tell from this photo of it, but it had that sweeping texture I have been shooting for. Ahh, no worries. I have so many more to go.

sweeping texture? I don't really know what you mean, I am afraid. The self portrait I am painting right now is turning out fairly well considering it's acrylic.. your painting helped me as for refrance for the iris of my eye. I would love to "talk paint" sometime

Very nice painting. Your warm values in teh skin tones really brings her forward in the painting. Nice detail in the eyes and the shadow work gives this piece nice depth. I like the contrast of light and dark, very chiroscuro, classical!!

thanks for the comment, I especially appreciate it coming from you, seeing the incredible skill you have. this painting in particular is coming along so well, I can't wait to see the the whole finished piece on dA. her skin really glows, and I think the anatomy of the face is the most convincing of all the paintings in your gallery -- you can tell that she really is this beautiful, that this is not an idealized portrait. the eyes and the flesh around them are my favorite part of the painting, i love scumbled highlights on flesh like you've done.
it's refreshing to find someone on dA with similar heroes in art, and someone who is an oil painter in a "traditional" fashion who is sick of how the art world in general looks down on such work. I'm giving you a devwatch and a fave, I can't wait to see more of your work, and I hope you're not too sickened by all my compliments

sensitive and vulnerable as all your women are, i feel like this one makes far more of a connection with us. It's interesting contrast, her hard gaze and soft features/flesh. Best use of shadow i've seen in some time, you have such a concept of how we women look and how to make us look the way we'd feel... in a semi idealized but nonetheless appreciated way.
as always my admiration for your work is boundless

For a painter to hear that his most recent paining is the most inspiring, is about the best thing he could hear. Thanks.
Crap, I just realized that I was writing in the third person. I was waiting for the day that I just called myself "Hammer". Ya know, that crazy painter cliche "Hammer is hungry!" kinda thing. Looks like I am on my way. I think Whistler waited till he was like fifty to start referring to himself as "Whistler"... I just hope I can hold it off 'till then. It is super-annoying.
