Description
This year marks the 80th anniversary of DOC SAVAGE, the enigmatic pulp hero, but I couldn't resist putting him side by side with my favorite, The Shadow. Here they're saving a damsel in distress from some sort of modern head-hunters, apparently in the basement of an Art Deco building in the middle of New York.. or something - just go with it. I used Jack Dempsey, the pugilist prize fighter of old, as Doc's model. This is a print I am making for DOC CON, here in Phoenix AZMicron pens on Strathmore 300 11x17. Adobe Photoshop

Β When the "zombie" had tried to escape, Doc had allowed it to, having planted a small tracking device on it, invented by Long Tom. Doc, Monk, and Long Tom had followed that which was once a man, into tunnels far below even those of the subway systems. The disturbing carvings matched those of no culture Doc knew about, and he had been to some of the remotest corners of the globe.

Β Doc and his helpers crept down the poorly lit tunnels, their small machine pistols at the ready. Off in the distance, they heard voices, chanting "KULAN GATH!! KULAN GATH!! KULAN GATH!!" Clark Savage Junior spoke over two dozen languages, and this was not one of them. He doubted if they were any Earthly language. When the three adventurers rounded a corner, they came across a sight to freeze the blood of lesser men. Here was Meredith Carter, clothing in tatters, chained to an altar. Over her stood that which should have been dead, but still moved. The being's skeleton face uttered words which made Doc's head hurt to even hear. Doc had spent some time in the library at Miskatonic University, and while he had read only a little of the Necronomicon, he still new something of the book's black secrets.

Β Doc looked over the throng of worshippers. Some had once been living men, but still could walk and speak. Others were horrid beings; half human and half demonic sea creature, like the ones he had heard inhabited Innsmouth. Others were difficult to describe with mere words.

Β Clark Savage Junior did not believe in killing unless necessary, but this time he felt it was it was. He was not sure whether Kulan-Gath was even alive or not. He raised his machine pistol, and fired a short burst into Kulan-Gath. The black robed figure tumbled backwards, but almost immediately started to rise. At a word, the throng of worshipers rushed Doc and his men.

Β The gas grenades Monk carried proved nearly useless. The shocking device that Long Tom had invented carried enough juice to kill a bull, but it would only stun some of the fishlike creatures, but the sparks caused some of the walking dead men to catch fire. From his vest, Doc had produced some small incendiary grenades, not much bigger than a shotgun shell, but capable of burning through a bank vault door. These proved useful, but soon were exhausted. The standard rounds from the machine pistols were not much good, but explosive rounds killed a few creatures.Β Soon, the battle was down to hand to hand, with Doc and his men still outnumbered twenty to one. They were surrounded by foes almost impossible to kill, and ready to sell their lives dearly, when Doc heard a laugh....

Β Doc Savage had heard of the Shadow, but they had never met. He even suspected who the Shadow really was. The Shadow was a ghostly figure; a story told by criminals to frighten other criminals. He did not approve of what the Shadow did, but there was evil in the world, and every resource was necessary to fight against it. The Shadow's voice would care many men, but not Doc. "I need a clear line of sight."Β Doc understood, but did not know what good it would do. He crouched down, his broad back forming a table, and the Shadow leaped up on it. His twin automatics roared, and Kulan-Gath collapsed, never to riseΒ again. Doc was seldom puzzled, but this time he was. "How..." The Shadow dropped a bullet into his hand. On it was engraved an odd symbol; something like a five pointed star. "That symbol is ancient and powerful against many evils. Contact Miskatonic University, and they will help you clean out this nest of evil. Miss Carter will remember nothing of this. I will cloud her mind." Doc nodded. This was best kept from the general populace. "One thing: how did you even know we were here?" The Shadow actually winked at him. "I have eyes and ears in many places. The tracking device Long Tom built sent out a signal. An associate of mine, whom I shall call Burbank, picked up the signal, and informed me. That is I shall tell you today." Doc Savage glanced around, and the Shadow was nowhere in sight, but he heard a laugh off in the distance.

I wonder what Doc's education curriculum was, as I would be interested in following it. (Somewhere in my pile of books, there's a grammar of Mayan.)
