Description This is the Blues. Or at least, this is one visual interpretation with artistic license of the blues, courtesy of your friendly neighborhood Scott P. 'Doc' Vaughn. What can I say, I like trains, I love old signs and lost places, and I love drawing beautiful women. This was interesting for me as a project as it was some things I wanted to try on several levels; This type of hatching, a full-page composition of a scene, and I hadn't tried a steam engine in years. I'm pretty damn satisfied on all of this. I plan to show this at a First Friday art walk in Nov. 06, so I rushed this ahead of some other projects... I hope you like.

I made the print sepia... which version do you guys like better? Lemme know...
Music listened to while drawing this: Title derived from an Indigenous song. Also, Robert Johnson, BB King, Zep, Doors, Stones, John Lee Hooker...

The train was just a photo I found online, which I lost the link to. The train crossing sign was from a b/w photo I took in Brownwood Texas at a set of tracks across from the cemetary where Robert E. Howard is buried.
Pen ank ink, about 15-20 hours. 8x10ish

Not only do I love this pic, but I love the blues. The train is a great touch, and for it to be a woman instead of a grizzled old man is awesome.

Wow this is absoluteley amazing. The shading is amazing and the poster on the wall behind the woman playing guitar was a nice touch it looks so realsitic like I would expect to see it at a train station.

Ive seen your stuff before, I think this is the first one ive seen in pen and ink. Great job on the train, the time spent on it shows and it looks very impressive. The perspective in the background behind the girl looks alittle weird though. Other than that, excellent job keep it up.

Great ink work! I like the train in there. You just don't see too many of those on D.A. The woman's pose is great too. I like the position of her hand on the guitar. Nice attention to detail when it comes to the piece as a whole. It is very well put together.

I have to admire the amount of time, attention to detail and thought into composition that went into this. As has been said, this is a masterpiece. Even if I could find the slightest thing to nitpick about, I'd just be making an @$$ of myself because of the sheer level of quality of the overall image.

Great work.

You know, my friend, you're right - this is an absolute masterpiece. The detail and technique are amazing, I love the perspective and the, and I'm quite blown away by it. I've seen you getting better and better with each passing day, week, month, year... and I've been so proud and pleased to see that progression - but for some reason (even though your other recent work has been just top notch!) this one really seems to capture your true gift as an artist.

I absolutely love the feel of this... the emotion is tremendous. It 'feels' like the blues. If you hadn't described the contents - I'd have immediatley said that I saw a girl at a middle-of-nowhere train station, maybe trying to make some decision about where her life is taking her, strumming away at a melancholy, bluesy tune.

Fan-freakin-tastic!

Now I shall expression my appreciation in the little know, but highly interpretive form of emoticon:

DocRedfield In reply to DV-Skitz [2006-10-26 20:20:36 +0000 UTC]

It interesting that the emotion of this can be so transcendant for some - It was a feeling that drove this, but not a dying passion. I guess when an idea is right, it can be moving even if it took a 'steady hand' to compose it.
Thanks for the emoticon fanfare, and the kindest compliments a friend could give

The train is done brilliantly. You've really used the ink to great effect there. I did some train drawings a while ago and they drove me to despair trying to capture all the detail, so a great accomplishment. I love the timeless quality this has and we can readily guess the girl's situation as much is conveyed in her pose. It's a wonderful drawing. Love it.

Scott, this is a masterpiece. I am in awe, really. That train engine is pure beauty. With it, I think you've done an end-run around my skills in ink and ended up with something your illustrator-friend in the Conan collection would look at and turn green over. Damn! I think I'm gonna' have to buy a print of this, actually. It's a superior piece, really. Thank you for the nod in the comments, but this has the feel of 100% DocRedfield (save for the missing bondage/assault of the sexy young woman... )--I don't see my work in this at all.

DocRedfield In reply to faile35 [2006-10-26 09:01:30 +0000 UTC]

I was hoping you were still up... I really wanted to show this to somebody, especially you, so thanks for taking a moment to comment and fave. It is very appreciated. Do you like this, or the sepia better (and does the print look right on your browser?... its screwy on mine, as are ALL of my prints)? As for its finished inking, I do owe you a debt (and I still think you're better at hatching in general, especially at a lot of dark textures) - you've shown me to just go for it with inking and not be afraid of how it may turn out, but take the risk and experiment with the textures and styles. In any case, means a lot to me that you praise it so highly. Honestly. It was a lot of fun figureing out where things/shapes were and how to ink them... I'm really pleased and not sure how I did it, and if I told me, I'd have to kill me.
In any case, we can buy each other drinks some time and tell each other how good the other is.. it'll be fun

faile35 In reply to DocRedfield [2006-10-26 17:55:22 +0000 UTC]

I like the black and white better than the sepia, though the sepia is good. I generally take that point of view, too (b-n-w is better than monochrome), though there are a few notable exceptions (most of which you'll find in fagashlil's gallery... Regardless, I'm sure your "normal" art will change now after doing this one, and I look forward to seeing your "liberated art" progress.

Don't do any killing just yet--the drinks idea sounds great.

Yes, the prints pictures were all only partial images when I checked it out.

Yeah, I was inspired by Carole's sepia stuff to give it a whirl... I think this is a progression of my dtailed illustrative work, but I also think I'll also do time-savers as well. I feel comforatable at last with hatching,t hough, which is saying something. I still chickened out on the girl in some areas, though...
Wonder what's wrong with my print gallery....
