The seventh of the Birthstone Mermaids returns to my gallery, after traveling across the United States through its many rivers. She was born closest to our shores, and has witnessed all of our triumphs and tragedies. Because of this, her sisters refer to her as the patriot. It also helps that July 4 is also her birthday

Her blue eyes and red colors also invoke the colors of the American flag, and I wanted her posed like she was doing the pledge of allegiance. Last time she was saluting, so I wanted her to do something different.

Rubies are available in shades of red, and rank 9.0 on the Mohs scale of hardness. They are the official birthstone of July.
