It's a great dramatic effect, but it doesn't reset itself. Rarity's friends are all replaced with mannequins, and then it just stays that way.

I concur. The permanence of the darkness tells a much more interesting story than it would have if it flipped back and forth, looping. If someone wants to see it a second time, the refresh button is right there.

Well, problem is, the image took so long to load, I had to wander off and do something else while it was loading.
Then it was just stuck there, and reloading the page did nothing to change that.

I agree. I think I understand the intention that was meant to come across, but it comes across way to quickly for any viewer to actually take a moment to think about it or interpret anything, it just goes away. And in order for me to see it again I need to reset the page, I can't take time to interpret anything with the first image without being broken up by the stuck page of the latter one. I understand the stylistic choice but I feel like it does more harm to appreciating the image, than good.

This whole fanart feels like something out of Silent Hill. In two ways actually. From Rarity's perspective: the people she loves fade away into lifeless mannequins. From our perspective: a lovelyΒ picture just dissolved into a depressing image.
