this started as a way for me to cosplay something since i didn't look like any character.
The OC-ness arrived from people asking me who I was since I didn't look like any of the characters
the backstory came later

the people who didn't know the series accepted the character as one of the characters.
for people that did know the series. there is a nameless alchemist in the original FMA that has a passing resemblance to me. I tend to carry around a screencap of that scene at times.
I tell people that I am that guy and that I have developed a backstory for him

yeah I took this guy and deduced that he was an Alchemist (everyone in that room was) and developed a backstory based on that info. Pretty much determined what he did prior to being sent here cause it wasn't like all these alchemists were just assigned to Central and didn't do anything. so I developed that Azrael was an Ishbal War Veteran, who worked originally for the Inspector Generals office, as well as being the CO of the Amestrian 82ndΒ Mounted Infantry Regiment so wore the shoulder flash of that regiment. Then I developed his abilities, then the rest came from there. The fanfiction I've written about him, pretty much evolved from that backstory since there was so much of it

Well, the Ishval War Veteran is rather common in backstories, but with his age and well, him being a State Alchemist, there is no choice, really.Β And a mounted alchemist? That will be interesting.
