Racing after the fallen doe as fast as he could Zuko quickly slipped through the bushes and down a small ledge to where a river lead to a number of smaller waterfalls and cascades. There he also found the cream doe – she apparently had fallen into the river and came to a halt in a shallow pool near a stone. She seemed fairly unharmed, the ripped vines still around her legs, as she lay utterly motionless, staring at something on the other side of the pool they now where at.

Following her gaze, Zuko found his eyes grow large too at the sight of what had apparently paralyzed the young doe standing on the rocky bank. There stood a creature unlike anything Zuko had ever seen before! It roughly resembled the body of a fawnling, yet it lacked fur for the most part, but was covered in leathery skin, only on its back and neck a thick, messy ruff of golden fur grew. This all however wasn’t the most disturbing thing about the hideous monster, it where the eyes! They were green as the forest, but filled with an insanity that sent shudders up Zuko’s spine as the thing’s gaze stayed glued on the fallen doe, terrible eyes lusting for her as the creature licked it’s lips, drool dripping down into the water of the river. It looked more like a fox finding a chick fallen from the nest than the fawnling it once might have been.

The prince knew that he had come to return the doe to where she belonged, he too knew that this monstrosity was maybe dangerous – who knew what sort of devious magic this demonic thing might wield. He knew that it might have been wiser to run and fetch the guard, tell his father about what he had seen and come back with enforcement. Yet, what would come upon the cream doe – princess or not – she was doe and it was the duty of a royal stag, no, of any stag to protect a doe and make sure she was safe! No, even if it was foolish, he couldn’t just leave her. What sort of pathetic hypocrite would he be dreaming about heroes and himself running away, leaving a helpless doe to the claws of such a horrific creature!

“YOU!” he so demanded, stomping a hoof and to his great surprise the eyes of the creature shot up and met his instead. His heart skipped a beat, when the thing curled its lips into a snarl, revealing yellowed teeth, but he was not going to let himself allow to be afraid, “I am Prince Zuko, son of King Rafe of Glenmore and I demand you to remove yourself and leave this doe alone, so I can return her to safety!” Silence followed, a horrible moment of utter silence and then a strange noise escaped the creature, it almost sounded like a devious chuckle.

However, before Zuko could think any more about it, the creature charged, forcing also Zuko into action. They met chest to chest right above the doe as both reared up, punching and biting at each other. Zuko saw something slip away, supposing it was the doe, but right now he needed to focus on the fight! The creature was very powerful and experienced too – it knew to catch Zukos punches and bites and seemed to always be a step ahead. Zuko felt himself losing ground, when finally he found the creature taking a step on its hind legs towards him, this was his chance! Backing off only a bit, he lowered his head and then made it snake forward, using his forehead to punch the creature right into its chest.

It gasped, tumbling back, Zuko already feeling a ping of victory, when suddenly, instead of getting to all four’s, the creature spun around and in the blink of an eye came down on his frontlegs, kicked his back legs up and hit Zuko with a force that literally sent him flying. Rolling over a couple of times the young stag gasped for breath as he tried to struggle to his feet, just to freeze when suddenly…

“Dirty blackblood bastard demon, you made the precious run away.”

… Zuko couldn’t believe his ears, what first had sounded like mere rumbling were actual words! Had he hit his head on a rock? No, he was still master of his senses! This devious monster – it spoke!

“You gonna burn.” The creature said again in its raspy, growling voice and as Zuko proceeded what it had said, trying desperately to jump back at his feet, it was too late – all he saw was fire!
