Description
Like the border map of Miasina, I've been trying to make some kind of map of Hsan for a while now. This was complicated by the fact Hsan is very poorly developed at the moment - one of the least defined places in the setting. Still, I got tired of this just sitting on my hard drive, and I figured some map is better than no map at all.
Hsan was supposed to be a representation of prosperous, but unknown east - a sort of mixture of China and India. It's culture and demographics were and remain nebulous. State-wise, it is united in a continent-spanning empire, which is why you see no borders and state names on the map. It's all just Imperial Hsan basically, and it was like this from relatively early in its history too. However, ruling such a vast area is not easy, and during times of trouble some parts may stop listening to the dictates of the emperor altogether. Plus, rebellions are a thing, and some may last for a while. Currently, the empire is fairly stable and nobody is making too much trouble, but as Altazian and Xlotic traders and adventurers start arriving in ever greater numbers, bringing with them new ideas, magic and technology, this may change.
Though much is unknown about Hsan, even in my head, there are three things I can tell you:
Western plains and Faxian island are the two most independent minded part of the empire. Faxian island was inspired by Sri Lanka, and I imagine them having a different religion than the rest of the mainland and a fairly distinct culture that once had its own rulers and states and still remembers that time. They are peaceful now, but ever Hsanic emperor knows they're a headache to keep in line. Traders from abroad have only increased this, as they then to land in its ports often, bringing a lot of wealth to the already maritime-focused economy of the island.
Western plains are sparsely populated and separated from the rest of the Hsan empire by a mountain range and monster-inhabited forests. This means they're often left to fend for themselves during times of trouble, and they dislike excessive meddling and instructions from the capitol. They're a bit inspired by the various horse nomads of central asia, but only a bit, as they have a lot less hostile relationship with Hsan than the historical horse nomads of central asia.
Hsanic hearland is somewhat sheltered in the middle of the continent, surrounded by natural barriers like mountains and forests. It is difficult for outsiders to reach, and so most outsiders have dealins with peripheral parts of the empire and never enter into it's core lands.
The cities marked on the map are simply some of the more important ones I can place, not a comprehensive list of important places. They're not named because I never named them.
The name Hsan is inspired by Cthulhu Mythos and its 'seven cryptical books of Hsan'. However, there is no real relation between them.
