Description
I took this photo shortly after the death of Sally Ride. The shuttle model is from Toshikazu Kawasaki's book 折り紙夢WORLD (Or translated to English: Origami Dream World). The globe uses 30 triangle edge modules designed by Lewis Simon and Bennett Arnstein, but with my own addition: I wrote a script that can take a suitibly projected map and essentially wrap it around an icosahedron, the chop up the image bits and generate triangle edge module templates. When the templates are folded and assembled in a particular order, the result is a icosaheral globe. A printable kit for the globe is available for download at globes.doft.net/
The background is a nice space themed scarf that my wife happens to have.

Very interesting. Sounds like a lot of work went into the globe.

Thanks!
I had to dust off the all that trigonometry from years ago in order to figure out where to center all the map projections. That was probably the most difficult part. It was also very time consuming to sort out which bits of map goes on each module and make sure I had everything labeled correctly to make assembly easy. Fortunately that part is done and now I can use my script to generate globes using any equirectangular map.

That's great. I'm secretly an origami enthusiast so if you ever need anyone to show off your works to, I'm available.
