Personality: Shikata is nothing if not cynical and sleepy. Although not naturally smart, he works his brain on the daily trying to find solutions to problems exerting as little energy as possible. His predominant trait is his luck (although to him it's the exact opposite). Despite constantly sleeping, he's always tired and crabby. He often sees little worth in things and everything is a task to him. He's more likely to sneak off from doing something to sleep and wait for the solution to come to him than to actively solve a problem. The highest regard he can have for someone is tolerance, and maybe respect if they really impress him.

Backstory: Everyone says Shikata was born lucky, but he sees it as the exact opposite. No matter what, everything works out for him the opposite of what he wanted. This comes off as lucky to other people, since Shikata mostly wants things like to fail, to be left alone, etc. He grew up childhood friends with Choichi Akimichi and Inoko Yamanaka, seeing as all their parents were on a team together. When it came time for the three of them to join the academy, Shikata's mother, who was incredibly strict, forced her son to join. Shikata worked up an ingenious plan to flunk out of the academy, but no matter what he does, he just couldn't seem to fail and passed with flying colors.
Part I: The Ino-Shika-Cho genin were put on a team with Ashi Inuzuka and her dog, Shiromaru, because she specializes in cooperative jutsu which was their families' specialty. They never quite seemed to get along with Ashi, but Shikata in particular mixed with her like oil and water. Ashi's wild, loud personality bothered and demotivated Shikata. To take out her anger on them, Ashi pushed them to extremes, and as she did so, she settled into working with their strengths. Ashi, seeing a calculative element to Shikata, focused him on leading, much to his dismay (that luck again...). After Ashi hit this point, she watched her team soar. With a pattern worked out, they all excelled until they were ready to participate in the chunin exams. During the eliminations between the second and third part of the exams, Shikata watched both of his teammates come alarmingly close to death. Although his fight went without a hitch, he was worried for the final part of the exams. He was against Makoto Niimoto, who forfeited the match. Shikata was still promoted to chunin.
Part II: Shikata actually managed to find some peace in the day-to-day tasks of a chunin working for Lady Hokage. Although he still had to suffer through missions, he was most often put on city guard with a partner who didn't mind if he slept through his shifts as long as he woke up if trouble were to arise. When Tasuke comes back to Konoha, Shikata had just received the news that he was being considered for a jounin. His plans to worsen his image only ended him being awarded for civil service. He wasn't happy.
