Great job. What enjoy so much about what you did is that you produced a excellant replica of so grand and rare species of a animal. I know you had to work without real life images to go by and you did a wonderful job. I feel like I saw a great underwater photogragh still. Thanks

Thank you. It's true that when I painted this over 20 years ago, underwater photographs of blue whales were very rare. However, that's no longer true, thanks to the many dedicated underwater film-makers and photographers out there these days; many of them are friends of mine on Facebook, including Charles "Flip" Nicklin. If you've seen a photo of a whale or a dolphin in National Geographic anytime since 1980, most likely Flip took the picture. Last year the University of Chicago Press published a book about Flip's life's work, entitled "Among Giants: A Life with Whales". It was an instant best-seller. Go look him up on Google, and look for his book at your local book store or library, you will not be disappointed.

Beautiful work, and thank you for adding many of my painting to your favourites. Please feel free to comment on my work; it is the first time that I am showing my paintings. I have been on deviant art only for 3 weeks, so comments from an artist like you would be important for me. Thanks again and please read my journal entry on my profile page.

You're very welcome. I see a lot of passion in your work, which is what makes your work so appealing. Sometimes the anatomy is not always the best, but for me, with your work, that's not really much of an issue, because I feel that you are capturing the essence of the whale; the way it moves and behaves; the power and the grace and the beauty, and of course, the wisdom.
I'm not very surprised that you feel that an old soul is guiding your hand when you paint the whales; they have that kind of effect on us. I guess that I've always known that the cetaceans have been guiding my work, but over the last couple of years I've come to consciously ask for their help and guidance when I paint them, and it has made a huge difference in my work.

Thank you. I painted this with Opaque Watercolor (gouache), on a clay-coated paper called "Color-Aid Paper". It comes in 314 different colors/shades, and years ago you could buy it in 18 X 24 inch sheets at almost any art supply store. Now the only thing they sell in art supply stores is a color swatch book and smaller sheets (Like 6 X 9) for crafting. The only way you can purchase the larger sheets anymore is to order them directly from the the company headquarters in New York. Their web site is at [link] .

Actually I do believe they updated that count didn't that? Or am I wrong? I read on a current Ceta page that there were estimated to be only 2,000 Blue Whales left. They could be full of poo-kaka though.

It's really hard to say with any real accuracy exactly how many animals of any species exist, when it comes to whales, because they are so hard to track and thereby get an accurate count. For blue whales in particular, go to the Wikipedia article at [link] and scroll down to the section on "Population and distribution today", and you'll see several conflicting reports. I'm guessing that the 2,000 figure refers to a total population estimate for one specific area, such as the Northern Pacific, and not a world-wide estimate. And for just the sightings off the southern California coast, there's been quite an increase in the number of animals seen over the last 10 years, which is very encouraging, to say the least.

Thank you. Actually I had this painting professionally scanned several years ago, as It's much too big to fit on a regular, home-style scanner.

I love these animals, Every time I see one it's just so overwhelming and impressive. I think this really captures what's going on below what you can see on the surface.

Thank you. You're so lucky to have seen them and photographed them, along with the other cetaceans that you've seen and photographed. Believe it or not, I've never had the chance to see a live whale in the wild; all of my work is based on other people's photographs/films/videos and over 40 years of extensive research.

Sad isn't it? I love Blue Whales, so I'm favoriting this piece of brilliance. Some day this may be all we have left of them, unfortunatly.

Thank you.
Well, the good news is that the blue whales are slowly making a comeback, so perhaps they will not become extinct. Right now the biggest threat to all the great whales, and the oceans in general, is overfishing. Many fish stocks are on the edge of collapse, and that's what the whales eat, along with the dolphins and most other cetaceans.

There's not much most people can do, other then be aware and be carefull what you buy, who and what you support. I hope that awareness will increase, but sadly enough most people don't even know Blue Whales exist.
