Description
Stage 1 of my Thesis project for SVA Illustration; I decided to do sculptures. The theme is "Fairy Tales," exploring the darker side of them. I used the story Taming the Pooka by DR McAnally, which is available for free on Project Gutenberg here: [link]3-headed 8-legged Pooka at the height of his power before he was tamed! Yes, I took some artistic liberty here - the legend doesn't state that he has this form, though he IS a shapeshifter. I just needed a way to describe the height of power...plus I wanted to do a 3-headed 8-legged horse, lol.
I still have a lot more to do on these to get them to be show-worthy. I'll show you the finals once I'm finished. The fire is lit up with blue LED lights. I sculpted everything (except the action figure, lol). I sculpted the fire in clay, then cast it in clear plastic Smooth-On so it would pick up the light.
Hours and hours and HOURS of work here.

Oh my goodness this is amazing! I am completely in love with this sculpture. I have been on such a multi-limbed kick this year and seeing this just makes my day.
First of all, I find making multi limbed animals can be challenging when it comes to making the anatomy believable and in that I definitely do not think you fell short, this looks super convincing! I really love the musculature, those legs are absolutely beautiful and the hooves are so well done. I really like the faces too, there is such an intimidating power to them especially the middle one and then that fire just tops the whole thing off. I love that you made the fire light up too, what a wicked idea! Well done! I have been tempted to sculpt an eight legged equine recently and now I am doubly inspired.

Sorry it took me SOOOOOO LOOOOOONG to respond to you!!!
What an awesome coincidence! Just after I uploaded that guy I'd noticed your 8 legged critters pop up in a group somewhere. They look awesome, by the way. I love how you explore the subconscious--all your work is very surreal and visceral. I see you've had some success, too! Congrats on becoming a senior member (I know that was a while ago but still). In any case, keep exploring and keep making art. I hope many more 8 legged and otherwise critters pay you some visits in the future!

Thank you so much for your interest! I have been considering selling them, but they have to go into my school's Junior show first for about a month. Most likely I will soon be taking sculpture commissions. If you're interested, I'll keep you posted about their status

I adore the artistic liberty you took here... not only have you made the anatomy believeable, but by giving it eight legs, it has just a hint of sleipnir in it, which makes me all kinda of happy. All of that work sure did pay off!
