A while back I got my friend Chris a softbox accessory for his speedlite flash, and seeing as I got a new tattoo done in Singapore we thought it would be the perfect subject to test the softbox out.
The tattoo took 7 hours to do in total, in roughly 3.5 hour chunks. It is meant to be a tribute to my love of all art with the theme of the connections between love and pain, beauty and destruction.

This is top-notch. Simply a wonderful image. In terms of head-and-shoulders portraiture it's an example of the rare case where it's successful without seeing the eyes. Indeed, I think eye contact would have detracted from the image. The splash of light on the subject's right cheek provides just the right amount of relief from the shadows. The softbox worked wonderfully to pick up detail in the shirt. The angular composition is dynamic but doesn't lead the viewer's eye out of the frame due to the intimate proximity of the subject. Kudos to Chris. Love the tattoo and I applaud your willingness to sit through 7 hours to get it done. Ouch. One caution, though, lad, from an older person's perspective. Moving forward, don't get a tat' anywhere where it can't be covered up. There's quite a bit of discrimination here in the States against people with ink. Even people working construction jobs and in grocery stores face employment challenges if they can't cover them up. Could this shot be improved? Maybe in a studio situation with more lights you'd want to throw a spot of light on the background behind the head, or to illuminate the edges of the shoulders. Other than that I don't see how it could get any better. Well done, gentlemen!

The portrait looks fantastic, the lighting is wonderful and casts great shadows and highlights across the photo. The tattoo looks great too as the colours are fantastic and the rose looks really well drawn.
