Description This is the only (If not, one of the very few) images of Merlin's basis in the experimental state. The three funnels (or chimneys) were an attempt to disperse the locomotive's exhaust to make the train less visible to enemy bombers. Even though it didn't work I would love to know how this experiment would have worked had it did. It's a real shame that there is very little information on this experimental engine as I find it so fascinating to look at and learn about!

I do. I also find this confusing because I don't see why they'd spend the money getting the modifications removed if the loco worked exactly the same as it did before. It's a true shame because the loco could've been a fantastic addition to any railway museum if they had kept the two other funnels.
