Al thought it's sad Hordak think Entrapta betrayed him, and this probably will really damage their relations...

Well, I agree what Catra did was evil, and really done much harm - but the thing and irony are, Catra is in part a monster of Hordak's own making - if he didn't set up the authoritarian, and abusive to many, like Catra society, Catra wouldn't be the twisted, emotionally broken person she is today.

The fact Catra said to Hordak his line of propaganda about princesses, and him believing it, is I think to further shiw the fact Catra sabotaged his and Entrapta's relationship, is in part a product of his own actions. Yes, Catra knows the Horde were the villains, but the propaganda about princesses, did really influence her mentality - her friendship with Adora started to fall apart, when it came out Adora is a princess; Catra didn't want to change sides, in part due to her preconceptions about princesses, and that she will be even less than in the Horde; further down the line, to Catra sit started to seem Adora always had to succeed over her, and be more loved, including by their mother, and even Entrapta saying Adora is right, making it seem to Catra the universe itself is fuck*ing with her.

Even Shadow Weaver being seemingly close with another princess - Glimmer - and Catra's life only being spared by Shadow Weaver as Glimmer was low on energy - further drove her into this delusion.

Yes, Catra's more and more vicious personality, and degrading mental state was in a large part due to Shadow Weaver's abuse, and her betrayal and manipulation last season - but as Catra's herself stated - she thinks her life broke her, not this singular string of bad luck - as she said "some people have a bad day - I had a bad life".

Although Hordak, even after Entrapta pleaded for Catra's life, send her to what he though was at best a wild-goose chase combined with a lifelong exile to deadly waste, but to him probably  a death sentence (ie Hordak himself sated he thought Catra is "not returning" from the Crimson Wastes).

Again, this is all meant to be ironic, and it's surprising how well the writers managed to fit all of this as aside from the fact I mentioned above, Hordak would probably never become close to Entrapta if not for Catra, Catra sending Entrapta to the Beast Isle (although this was more out of desperation - ie Catra came out shocked with herself she struck Entrapta unconscious, and was even feeling guilt about it, even if it doesn't justify this, as I mentioned, Catra was in a very bad mental place here, and didn't even care she would destroy the world, and kill herself along it).

To make it even further ironic, Catra and Hordak are also quite similar - with Hordak also being birderline obsessed with proving his worth, especially to familiar figure (Horde Prime - his brother/creator), like Catra originally to shadow Weaver, both being treated unfairly by them, and abused, actions of both ultimately destroying their close relationships (if again, indirectly in Hordak's case).

And yes, one can say Catra became now even worse than Hordak, at least in some ways, but when you think about it, she had probably an even worse life.

A very accurate quote, and not only here, but many situations in real life.

(the part bellow is very long, but I couldn't make it really shorter, due to just how complicated Catra situation here is in reality)

About Catra, I know she rejects her chances at redemption, happiness or new beginning, But the the thing is, it makes sense with her upbringing.
Due to Shadow Weaver blaming and punishing Catra for things that weren't her fault, or when she and Adora done something together, only she was punished (up being threatened with death). Such treatment, especially since their whole life from early childhood, causes people to have great difficulty at recognizing their own mistakes.

Hordak also kinda played into this - while Catra did allow herself to be manipulated by Shadow Weaver, Catra's shouldn't be made responsible for being Shadow Weaver's warden, especially prior to her being deported to the Beast Isle - as Angella noted with Adora, Shadow Weaver was very probable to manipulate Adora, the same was with Catra - she was her mother, along with being a skilled manipulator. This is why in real life, a family member, friend or other loved isn't allowed to guard prisoners, especially dangerous ones. Hordak giving here full responsibility on for in part his own screw-up. Yes, he gave Catra the possibility confess that she failed, but even if she is his second in command, the issues still stand.

Shadow Weaver's upbringing of Catra, also caused to have her complexes towards Adora, and being emotionally dependent on her, even if she doesn't really want to admit it. Even others in Horde pointed it out to Catra, with Lonnie threatening her without Adora, there is no one to protect her.

This along with other things, contributed why Catra didn't take her chance at redemption, or second chance at life, and made much more difficult.

This caused Catra, to not want to go with Adora, the times she proposed it - Catra from what she knew, would be even more dependent on Adora, than in the Horde – and the thing is, this is a large part true is true. I mean, the Rebellion would only really accept Catra, especially after the Princess Prom, only because she's Adora's friend, at least initially. Yes, Catra would probably be trusted after some time, but here her fears had some reall foundation.

Even then, it did seem for a reason in Promise, that Catra would change side - as I think that if not for Light Hope emotional manipulation of Adora and Catra (to get Adora to resign from her bonds). I think it's intentionally communicated as such, with Light Hope severing Catra's and Adora's relationship, knowing it was at this point, still arguably Adora's strongest bond. With Catra, it's also evident the first memory was pleasant to have her drop her mental defenses, and the latter memories were to "show" Catra that Adora always got preferential treatment, had no chances to rise as long as she is with Adora, would be always her shadow, that Adora didn't really keep her promise.
This aren't true, at least not exactly, and especially with Adora, but it's evident Light Hope convinced Catra of this.

Similarly, in the Crimson Wastes, Catra did from what it seems consider Scorpia's offer to ditch the Horde – until Adora revealed Shadow Weaver betrayed Catra, only to go to help and join Adora. This a the moment were she decided she would return to Hordak, to spite Shadow Weaver and Adora. And moment were for the second time, something broke within Catra (again, because of Shadow Weaver).

And to be clear, what Shadow Weaver done, brought before this Catra to her lowest place in life until this point. When she was imprisoned in Shadow Weaver's place, Catra resigned herself to death or any other fate that wait for her. As she told in the bar in the Crimson Wastes – she didn't think she has anything to lose at this point. This is also why I think Catra was sad Scorpia was helping her through a lot of their travel in the Crimson Wastes – I think Catra truly felt bad Scopia loses her effort, on what Catra thought was an fruitless effort, for a person who already gave up. I think it's even quite possible, she mocked Hordak, and intentionally angered him, to provoke him to just kill her, aside from getting just one way she can bring him down a bit. Catra's suicidal tendencies, are further visible in Remember, were intentionally allows herself to fall to be erased from existence. Yes, she survived and was  corrupted (physically) by the portal instead (possibly due to being in part it's creator, and being tied to it). And you know, being willing to kill herself, along with everything else.

This bring us to what she done in “Moment of Truth” - as I mentioned, by then Catra seeing Shadow Weaver being seemingly forgiven by the Rebellion, after all she done to her, and being so close to a princess she was told to hate all her life (and even being seemingly more affectionate with Glimmer than ever with Catra from this), further added to Catra's delusions, and and this point more and more worsening mental state. And there is, s I mentioned, the added factor of humiliation that Shadow Weaver only didn't kill Catra, as it drained Glimmer to much – it seeming to Catra Glimmer's health being seemingly more important, than her (Catra's) own life and death.

This, along with Catra's at least seeming suicidal tendencies and/or lack of self preservation instinct, caused Catra to not care the world would be destroyed, and attacking Entrapta when she told Adora was right. Again, at this point, in part due to continuous emotional trauma, Catra's belief she stated in bar it comes of to her as if the universe was against her, turned into delusion that it really is so, along with events which in in Catra's eyes, confirmed this.

With Catra attacking Entrapta, I don't think she wanted to kill her, or even would almost kill her – the stun rod was shown to be used to take out people out of commission, not kill them. Catra also struck Entrapta in a moment of desperation and anger, something she initially ashamed and terrified of. And yes, she did chose to have Entrapta to be sent to the Beast Island. Although in part, I think she might have done as otherwise, she would have to either kill, or cripple Entrapta, to not have the possibility she informs Hordak, seeing Entrapta can escape from most bonds easily. Yes, that wouldn't be a justification of her actions, but I think it shows Catra was here, ultimately desperate, more than anything.

To be clear, this doesn't absolve, or justify Catra's actions and choices, especially towards end. But I think it shows many people in Catra's shoes, with her life, would have it difficult to make better choices.

And to be clear, I think if Catra would have any chance at redemption, or even to have any true happiness in life, she must become able to recognize her mistakes, and would have get over her issues and fears that hold her back.

Of course, it might be to late, and I more ad more feel after the season 3 finale, the series might end something like this (if less bloody) (click to see the whole comic):

Yes, it's a long read, but as I mentioned, Catra's situation, is as complicated as her (especially by season 3), so hence it's so long. And as I wrote in this comment and bellow (with batmanwins), this doesn't absolve, or justify Catra's actions and choices, just that many people in Catra's shoes, with her life, would have it difficult to make better choices.

And that if she has any  chance at redemption, or even happiness, Catra must realize her choices were her own.

Tragic as it is, I find the cycle of abuse that has shaped pretty much all the antagonists in the series very interesting.

Catra clearly went further off the deep end than most people would, but it is easy to see how she became what she is, though ultimately Adora is right. In the end Catra's awful choices were her own, just as everyone's are, and that realization is what lets Adora break the cycle of abuse Horde Prime started.

To be clear, I'm on the page with you with Catra, and the cycle of abuse.
I just still find her situation very tragic, and the fact her own choices, take away her happiness, makes her even more so. And as I stated, if Catra can have any chance at happiness, she must make a similar realization like Adora, even if it will be even harder for her.

Personally I don't think Catra is beyond redemption. Nobody is. I think even Hordak and Shadow Weaver could be redeemed if they wanted to be. That's the key word though, THEY have to want it.

Scorpia, Adora, and whoever else cares for them can't want it for them. If Catra is going to be redeemed she has to want to be better of her own volition.

Like you said, she has to realize that their choices are their's but she also has to realize that her mistakes are hers and hers alone. Not Adora's or even Shadow Weaver's.

Son-of-Dromund-Kaas In reply to batmanwins [2019-11-24 22:13:26 +0000 UTC]

Well, ALMOST no one is beyond redemption. I'd say Horde Prime is probably up there with King Ghidorah, Aku, First Chaplain Erebus, Frieza and Darth Sidious in being fully aware of how evil they are and outright laughing at the idea of redemption.

But I'm with ya for Catra. I'd say Double Trouble's little Pep-Talk/Mockery along with Scorpia, he last real friend, leaving her because of her relentless abuse, has finally helped break down the delusion of her always being the victim of circumstance or that her quest for power heals the wounds from the past.

At the very least, her convincing Horde Prime not to kill Glimmer shows that, for the first time, she's done something that is simply the right thing to do and not in a way that benefits her.
