Description Odontocetes aka toothed whales distinguish themselves from baleen whales, Mysticetes, by having teeth and echolocation. Where echolocation started was never really sure, but luckily fossils exist.

Cotylocara macei is a bottlenose dolphin-sized toothed whale and its skull shows the signs of a spermaceti organ being present. However its echolocation skills were probably not yet evolved as good as nowaday's Odontocetes do. Cotylocara lived during the Late Oligocene and its remains are from South Carolina.

I also see there were no reconstructions of this whale on DA yet while searching for refs, so hurray! Let's give this whale some attention.

A tad too much indeed. I should've made its snout a bit longer.

Me neither, it's weird there weren't any reconstructions of it here. I mean, it's the oldest whale with echolocation as far as I know and it's published only in 2014. Not that it is some kind of obscure whale discovered in the early 1900's or so, then I would understand why nobody gives it attention.

Yeah, somehow I went a bit too much for a dolphin-like look.
