Description I totally did not expect to have this done start to finish in one evening with Inkscape. Origami tutorials have suddenly become a lot easier than I anticipated, which is awesome since it'll probably let me document the rest of my designs before the summer's over. It's like the program reads my mind somehow.

Update: fuzzy edge issues fixed I hope (had exported to the wrong resolution).

Difficulty
I described this as intermediate rather than easy because of step 8. If you're familiar enough with sink folding to be able to fudge an open/partially closed sink fold to meet whatever inner structure you created with the angles chosen in previous steps, it should be easy enough (and if it's not, really, just mash the paper down as far as it needs to go and try to keep the previous folds intact...).

Alternative Steps
If you're really ambitious, the mane can be better defined using a sink fold rather than just bending it over a bit. I don't usually do the sink fold version unless I'm using really big paper. This can also allow for the ears to become pointier and better defined with an extra crimp.

Usage Policy
To me this design is not complicated, so I would expect that other people have happened across similar to nearly identical patterns. However, I did develop this myself and therefore hope that my choice of details is at least somewhat unique. If you follow this tutorial to create a horse/unicorn and wish to post the result as artwork either here or elsewhere, please credit the design you used to create the horse/unicorn.

UPDATE (17-June-2009): HOOOLLLYYY COW! Woke up this morning and was completely confused by my message count until I saw one referencing the DD in one of the comments here. Took a few minutes and a cup of coffee for that to sink in all the way. Thanks so much everyone!!!

Here are some good videos about sink folds and other folds, which may help for those that get stumped in the first few steps of my design:
- Open sink (they call it a reverse sink for some reason, but it's the same thing)
- Open/closed sink
- More complex sinks
- Inside/outside reverse fold

Getting the back legs to look good is probably the hardest part of this design. If it doesn't come out right on the first try, small adjustments in the folds from steps 6-8 may be all that's needed to get the hind legs back in shape. Sometimes those can be adjusted without completely having to undo and redo everything. Also, this is intended to be a 3-D design, so the proportions can be modified somewhat as the model is shaped to be 3-D. So, if your models legs don't exactly match the diagrams (there's quite a lot of variation even in the models I've made!), try shaping to see if you still get the desired result. You can also do other modifications to thin the body or legs as you see fit. The silver unicorn pictured has one such modification made to the underside of the body.

UPDATE (19-June-2009): a video tutorial was requested, so I gave it my best shot for those that are having trouble: [link] . Please note though that it's the first video like that I've ever done, so I don't know if it shows things in enough detail. I was a bit worried about the webcam resolution, but that's the best I could get.

that's a really nice design and the diagrams are easy to read. i tried it, but i'm an amateur and i used regular printer paper, so step 8 wasn't very easy. my model now kind of looks like yours, only with a fucked up back.

Oh thanks a lot, that will make the things I had problems with a lot clearer! So when my exams are finished and I find some decent paper (one of the reasons I went wrong I think, regular print paper doesn't fold too well ). I'll give it another try!

it's soooo cool!!! *grabs paper and starts*....*gets stuck* uh....i got to 6 and then i got confused....how do you do 7?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

DonyaQuick In reply to darkfuzzyluvchocolat [2009-06-17 17:26:19 +0000 UTC]

7 is a regular reverse fold, but depending on the exact place you choose to fold it and the choice of fold angle in step 6 (different angles yielding different leg proportions), the long triangular flap may need to lay slightly to one side of the the inner flaps of paper produced by steps 5 and 6, making the inner structure of the model a bit asymmetrical. If the fold is done really close to the front of the model, that's when it starts to require asymmetry (also making step 8 more of a closed sink fold than an open one).

could you possibly make a video of how to do it? if you can, i would be forever thankful!!! please let me know if you can or not...thanks!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

DonyaQuick In reply to darkfuzzyluvchocolat [2009-06-18 15:30:35 +0000 UTC]

I'll give it a try. I would have to use my laptop's webcam, which should be high enough res to show things clearly. I've never tried to record a video with it though (only done streaming) so it may take me some fiddling around for me to figure out how to do it.

DonyaQuick In reply to darkfuzzyluvchocolat [2009-06-19 05:32:47 +0000 UTC]

Wow well that was significantly easier than I thought it would be. ~30min with a web cam and a few min editing, and bam. Had to break it into 4 parts because of the length. It's got some bits at the start that are redundant to what's already been written in the deviation description (regarding paper choice), but I figured it's possible someone might see the youtube of it at some point without seeing this page.

[link]

I'm such a video noob LOL. That's probably reflected in my awful commentary. Let me know if the video quality was good enough for it to be useful.

darkfuzzyluvchocolat In reply to DonyaQuick [2009-06-17 19:21:48 +0000 UTC]

thanks....but i guess that's not what my problem is....i think i'm messing up somewhere between step 6 and step 7....i don't know though....hmm, i think i probably just shouldn't make it....

but thanks anyway! i guess i'm just more of a visual person, so i'll see if i can find a video on youtube or someting.

My mane is having issues, and my front legs are huge, but I like it! This is one I must memorize! Great job, and congrats on the DD!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

DonyaQuick In reply to theoriginalhappydais [2009-06-17 16:19:44 +0000 UTC]

Thanks for giving it a try! Which mane did you use, the fold over or the sink type mentioned in the description? The sink type is pretty tricky.

To get the front legs in proportion, it's a matter of eyeballing the approximate fold lines when making folds 6-8. Occasionally I've eyeballed it wrong and had to backtrack a couple of steps, so it's not trivial! If the front legs are really huge, then the fold in step 6 probably needs to be brough closer to the body, and the fold in step 7 may need to be brought closer to the front (leaving more of a point at the back).

theoriginalhappydais In reply to DonyaQuick [2009-06-17 16:56:46 +0000 UTC]

Actually, I didn't really understand the mane step at all. Mine just sticks straight up and looks like a giant lion's mane. (Think Simba from Lion King.)

And that's probably what went wrong. I'll attempt a few more today. Thanks for responding! ^^

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

DonyaQuick In reply to theoriginalhappydais [2009-06-17 17:20:31 +0000 UTC]

The mane step is just a strong crease to make it fold to one side and some shaping if desired, nothing all that fancy. Sometimes it takes a wet folding to shape the mane if the paper's thick or generally uncooperative.

Holy crap!!! I love your designs and final models. What a great mind you must have to figure this kind of thing out. Wow. I am also interested in Japanese art forms and recently wrote an article on haiku structures, which is similar in a way. I use the metaphor of folds a lot to talk about haiku.

Anyway - this is fantastic. A well deserved DD as well.

Oops. I'm stuck. I have no idea what a sink fold is. How do you fold that?

👍: 0 ⏩: 2

DonyaQuick In reply to Trap-Eds2009 [2009-06-17 16:12:54 +0000 UTC]

Open sink folds are probably most easily seen the first time by watching someone else do it, since they're difficult to diagram well even with intermediate steps. Here's one video that shows it: [link] (open sink part is ok, not too fond of how the open sink is shown) although the person tends to hold the model partially offscreen sometimes, which is a bit annoying. I will see if I can find a set of good fold walkthroughs to link to from the deviation description.

It's kinda like you're poking in that part. It's hard to describe. Many origami sites have tutorials and dictionaries for these fold types, try one of those. ^^
