Description
Expedition Diary. This is the first entry on my exploration diary to catalog magical creatures. All living beings on this world are categorized in three divisions:
- Mimagikó: Ancient Greek for "non magical". This category includes normal animals and plants like goats, wheat and most of all life, including humans.
- Magikáepireasménos: Ancient Greek for "magically influenced". This category includes living beings whose evolution has being affected, triggered or influenced by the magical energies that flow through the world. Beings such as unicorns and dragons are inside this category. Human sub-species like Elfs and "Beast Men" (Homo bestialis) are also good examples of this.
- Dimiourgíthikanmagiká: Ancient Greek for "magically created". This category envelops all beings whose mere existence cannot happen naturally and magic was fully involved on their creation. Beings such as Trolls and Fairies enter this specific category.
Being the first log of this diary, it felt necessary to explain such classification to avoid any future confusions regarding the matter. With that out of the way, I took advantage of being here in Europe to use one of the most famous magical animals living here as the first entry of this exploration diary. The European Unicorn.
Freya's Note: "I was very excited when Eduardo told me we would see real unicorns. I always wanted one since I was a little girl, but father never let me have one. I must say, I was a bit disappointed when I saw the real thing. You shouldn't trick a lady such as myself Eduardo, that is very ungentlemanly on your part."
Ok, first, I didn't trick you. What did you expect? A slender horse with perfectly combed mane and a slim spiraled horn? This is the real world milady. Sorry about that, Freya has been a bit of a nuisance ever since I was given the mission to escort her by my senior officers of the Templar Order, but I wouldn't have gotten the permission to go on this personal crusade of mine if I hadn't accepted such condition. Anyway, let's start with the entry:
- Common Name: European Unicorn
- Category: Magikáepireasménos
- Order: Perissodactyla
- Family: Monókerodae
- Genus: Monókeros
- Species: Monókeros ferus
General Information: The genus Monókeros is a genus of mammals that include the European Unicorn, Atlantean Unicorns and the Kirin. The Monókeros family became separated from the others of the Perissodactyla order such as the Equidae, Rhinocerotidae and Tapiridae millions of years ago, which explains why they heavily resemble this other species and why they were confused with a horned horse hundreds of years ago, when they were in fact, a completely different species. Due to the magical properties found on this animals, such as their blood and horns, it's clear that this genus differentiated from the others due to constant exposition to magic. They are characterized by having a single horn on the forehead instead of close to their snout unlike their distant cousins the rhinoceroses and have really short manes.
Temperament: They are noble, docile, stable, diligent, pacient, obedient, brave, calmed and extremely intelligent creatures, however, they can become extremely aggressive when they defend themselves or members of their group. This species of unicorn specifically are amongst the smartest creatures on the planet. Despite not being as fast as the fastest kinds of horses due to their size and bulk, they more than make up for it with their incredible stamina, running for more than ten times more than their equine cousins.
Social behavior: They travel in herds like other herbivores and are extremely aggressive to predators. Females reach sexual maturity at 5 years while the males are capable of reproducing when they reach 10 years, with a gestation time of approximately 13 months, giving birth to a single foal and with a time period of 3 years between each birth. Each herd consist of a lead male with his harem of females and other young males and females down the herd's hierarchy. Their intelligence makes them capable of communicating and recognize each other individually.
Habitat: They roam free through the grassy plains of most of the European continent. Just like their horse cousins, they are extremely adaptable and can withstand almost any climate.
Feeding: As herbivores, they mainly feed from grass and other similar types of vegetation, though they can also eat certain types of fruits such as berries.
Special Characteristics: Curiously enough, the magical properties of their horns seem to render them immune and even counter other magic related abilities such as the fire breathing of dragons or any other type of dark magic. Their overall presence has also been proven to be therapeutic and fasten the pace of healing, both mental and physical.
Conservation Status: Vulnerable. Though recently they have started to recover some of their numbers, in the past they were hunted to the verge of extinction due to the special properties of their horns and blood. Fortunately, they have been a protected species since a hundred years ago, and slowly but surely will one day roam through all of Europe.
Human relationships: Due to the past extreme hunting of this animals, specially the white and black furred ones, nowadays, only certain nobles or members of The Hand such as elite templar knights are licensed to breed in captivity and have a domesticated unicorn due to their rarity. Thanks to their great intelligence, they are even easier to train than horses. It is known that they do not let anyone ride them unless they consider them worthy, and is even said they can feel if a person's heart is good or evil, which could be related not only to their intelligence and instincts but also to their connection to magic. It is also said that once they let you ride them, they will valiantly protect you from any danger, even with their lives.
End of the entry.
