a quick 1 hour zBrush sketch of ROM the SPACEKNIGHT. Doing super hard shiny surface modeling is something I need to get better at. This proves that. : )Related content

OMG I thought I was the ONLY one that had one of these toys when I was a kid. My god do you know how any times I've tried to explain who this was & got blank stares. You just made my freaking month!!Β I eventually found one on eBay and its in decent shape. I forget what I paid for it, but it was worth it.Β Wow...Β Your work is great and also made me fee very nostalgic today.
Ok since you obviously are old school in your knowledge of comics. I had another toy but I do not recall the name...I think it was called "Black Knight" but he was a space guy with a round head, all black with a cape and a big silver filled in v on his chest. Do you know if that's his real name and can you tell me anything about him.Β I also eventually found him on eBay as well but they too didn't know the name, just had it from an estate sale. If it helps, he was supposed to be a (maybe Japanese) knockoff of Darth Vader.
Anyway it looks like you posted this a long time ago but I hope you get this message and can help me find out the other guys name.Β Again, just love love love this photo above...great job!!!Β

Thanks a lot. That's actually a digital 3D model of Rom I did a ways back when I was first learning ZBrush. It's not a photo. I don't think I even had the toy, tho, it's foggy. I'm trying to think on the other toy you mentioned. Sounds vaguely familiar, but I can't place it. Perhaps if you had a pic I could see, it might help a lot with figuring out the name.Β

Micronauts. Back in the 70s and 80s Marvel licensed everything they could. They were often given free reign to create the stories for these properties that have become the cannon that we know so well including Transformers, GIJoe, Micronauts, ROM, Crystar, Inhumanoids and KISS to name a few. Some of these fared better than others but nearly all were fun. Transformers, GIJoe, Rom and Micronauts had the longest runs and some really great stories came out of each series. In some cases Marvel will still use original characters that they created for these titles but I sure miss the ongoing books.Β

Just lucky I guess, lol. Seriously luck has a lot to do with it. With you in the some of the same groups I am I dont need to watch you to follow your work but I did first come across you by accident. I was wanting to do a Guilala for my Revamp series and while doing some research I kept coming across your various concepts for him. Thats how I ended up becoming a fan of your work.Β

the diameter of ROM's neck is a bit too small but other wise these look pretty damn good to me although i prefer the more Sal Buscema looking eyes for Rom then the steve dikto type. by the way what exactly is the medium zBrush?

Hmm, you may be right. I know very little of Rom. Is he a human being in a suit? I'll look up those artists' renditions of the character to understand what you mean.Β

I've been choosing characters that pose certain challenges for the 3D modeling involved. I always have liked ROM in terms of how he looked, but never knew too much abut him.Β
