Description
Hello, This little guy is niska. And I was wondering If any fish savvy people could help me diagnose this little guy, or at least confirm my diagnoses. First there is a little information that you should know. Niska lives in a 5 gallon tank with heater and filter. He has three pellets in the morning three at night. He is active and responds and basically shows all of the signs of a happy fish. The only problem I am currently having with him is that his top fin appears to be getting a a little ragged. Before it is asked all plants are silk. Aquarium salt is in the tank along with Bettasafe from tetra aqua. Stress coat from aquatic Pharmaceuticals and Stress zyme from aquatic Pharmaceuticals as well. I have the medication for fin rot (Maracyn-TC from Mardel) and would like some advise before treatment. If any one, please respond soon.Related content

Three pellets twice a day is too much. Try cutting down to only 3 or 4 pellets once a day. You are doing the right thing by feeding small amounts twice a day. A betta's stomach is the size of his eye. Is your tank cycled? What are your specific readings for ammonia, nitrate and nitrite? Aquarium salt is really useless against fin rot. I suggest treating with the correct form of Maracyn. Follow the directions on the package closely.

That doesn't look like fin rot to me. The dorsal is normal, the anal fin is also pretty normal, they're just rays that haven't grown as long as others and the webbing between them is reduced, and can be more prone to damage especially in a larger (than they are used to) tank with current from a filter. I see a lot of Betta and this is extremely common. Just keep an eye on it for a few days and as long as there is no abnormal changes (reduction of length, turning transparent, looking red/bloody) don't give it a second thought.
Fin rot heals fine with good clean heated water and a bit of salt anyway, absolutely no need for medication at all unless it is showing signs of infection. People are way too medication-happy and the medication you have is far more likely to do more harm than good.

I don't see any indications of fin rot either but keep a close eye on him. Be sure not to medicate him unless you know for certain something is wrong, over medicating or medicating without an illness can kill a Betta. He's gorgeous btw!

Beautiful betta for starters.
And as for the probable "symptoms" of fin rot I'd say I don't see any clear signs of it. From what it appears from this shot he's merely a happy and healthy fish who's only showing it through good fin growth. New growth will sometimes appear like a disease symptom but really isn't. And with bettas it can really make an owner afraid. Since your tank set up, food, and water + meds are all good I say there's nothing really wrong. But I am happy to see that your that observant and care that much!!

He is a little happy guy. [link]
Luckily I bought the meds before it really started to kick in. I have no idea why some people dont take responsibility. It was a real shocker to see how much work it takes to take care of a fish tank. Its worth it though. Hopefully since it was caught soon his healing time will be ok. He still shows all the signs of a happy healthy fish. His tail is in just slight tatters.

Give it a few days; if it gets any worst it's fin rot alright.
My betta's fins tear up sometimes, but they always grow back.

It got bad. Luckily I already bought the fin rot medication in case of emergency. Maracyn-TC.

If the fins are continuing to fray, then it probably is fin rot; one of our admins has a lovely article on betta diseases and treatments here . Best wishes bringing him back to full health.

Yeah, but it has been increasingly fraying. And there is nothing in the tank to cut himself with... Hopefully I will get a response...
