I like how it's still not completely horrifying. I mean, even when he's half-skeleton he's still got a bit of that old-timey Felix the Cat cuteness sort of thing going on. Also, swirly eyes!

Also, agreed with insanity in characters. It's so much more fun having an insane villain. It makes him unpredictable, and done right it can give him a complexity unseen in "for the evulz" sorts of villains like the Red Skull. Or an insane hero, like Max from Sam & Max or -SPOILERS- The Narrator from Fight Club.
