Great to learn new skills though. This one DOF, is something I really struggle to get right with my camera, but when you do, it's great

Ann, I don't know what camera you are using. Β SLRs (DSLRs) and mirror less quite often have a button you can press for DOF preview. Β When you do, it closes the aperture in the lens to the one selected either by you in aperture or manual mode or by the camera in any of the other modes. Β In the viewfinder you then see what the photo will look like, i.e. you will see what will be in focus and what not. Β With SLRs you will notice that the picture in the viewfinder darkens when you activate the DOF preview as there will be less light coming through, mirror less cameras with their electronic viewfinder will brighten the image on the screen.

I don't have an SLR or a DSLR Marcel. I have a bridge camera. Panasonic Lumix FZ200, which actually does a really good job. I just probably need to spend more time with it and look at the manual again which is probably much thicker than the bible!!!

I had a look at the manual of yours and it doesn't look like it has DOF preview function

No, it doesn't have that function. My granddaughter has a dslr and the showed me how hers does that. There's a big difference in the price though
