Description This tutorial was in the works for a while, and was kind enough to give me
ten names of characters to work with: Energon Sharkticon, TFA Lugnut, Cybertron Vector
Prime, RID Sideburn, Cybertron Menasor, G1 Scourge, Cybertron Crumplezone, G1 Reflector,
G1 Hot Rod, TFA Samurai Prowl.

In the end, I chose TFA Samurai Prowl because out of all of them, he is the one that I'm most
familiar with. XD It's quite the literal translation with few differences. ^^ Although I can honestly
say that he looks like I mixed TFA Samurai Prowl with a little TFA Yoketron.

I guess technically this might be my first tutorial, and I'm honored to share it with you guys!
I had a lot of fun doing this, and if you are an inspiring artist/designer, I hope this helps you.

Some Pointers:

1. This is my basic/default process, but it doesn't necessarily reflect the complete order that I do
things. I actually usually don't spend this much time on the head. Sometimes I don't even really start with
sketches, but for those of you who are not familiar with photoshop's tools, a sketch can really help ground you.
Sometimes I start in all black and white, and then add color on top with filters.

2. There is no text on how to show you to do this. Those tutorials are nice, but with this one, I
recommend you just look at the differences between each step, and understand the idea of layering. You'll
notice that I don't block out all the colors at once, I only really started with the silhouette and the yellow
bits, and even those were messy to start with.

3. It ain't completely crisp. And it's not meant to. This is a basic tutorial, and at first glance, it looks
pretty sharp, but of course, as you look closer, you can begin to see certain things like brush strokes, wayward
dots, etc... They give character... you hear me! Character!

4. I will change things as I go. They're subtle, but some things like the shape of Prowl's gold detail
and his smile are always somehow changing, either as rendering, or complete shape.

5. If you are happy at a certain point, MOVE ON. Remember guys, you guys have lives
outside work, and if you sweat the details to the point of going crazy, then something's gotta change. If you want
to be extra secure, then save several copies of your files. So If I felt that I passed a milestone, I could just save
this again as Prowl_2.psd, so that the original Prowl.psd would retain everything. And then if I wanted to go that
extra mile of security, I would save a Prowl_3.psd, so that Prowl_2.psd would be safe. As for my layers, I'll collapse a lot of
elements together with maybe exception of the eyes+visor+mouth. For something like this, I never usually
had more than 7-8 layers in photoshop.

6. Have fun! Becaiuse this is not a design that's going to be put in the show, I'm going to have fun with this.
We all know what TFA Prowl looks like, so how do I change him from a TFA to a TFP aesthetic? I pretty much
kept all the elements (I think) with maybe exception of the visor. I think the visor is a little different because in the
TFA universe, it looked more like sunglasses. I could have pushed this to go a little more away from Jazz, but I was
happy with the result. ^^

Enjoy!

Thanks a lot~

PS: Your Prime designs are absolutely gorgeous!

Thanks so much for the tutorial! Prowl turned out very nicely (again, looks like he stepped right out of the show)! Since there wasn't instructions in between each step, I did have some questions about the tutorial.

1. Were you using a certain brush? Did it have any special settings?

2. In step 5, how was that soft shading achieved? Was there a certain technique applied to it?

3. I'm going to assume each colour was on a separate layer, but perhaps you could clarify if otherwise?

4. I was just wondering how you got the visor from solid to translucent. Was it just a simple reduction of opacity or did you apply another method?

5. Finally, for the metalics... was it just a simple texture that was overlayed on every layer or was it some other technique.

I hope I was bearable with all those questions. XD I'm just really fascinated by the technique and I wish I understood better how you applied it to each step.

dou-hong In reply to Destron23 [2011-11-06 01:38:00 +0000 UTC]

1. I actually only use one brush, both for painting and erasing. It's called "hard round pressure opacity." If you click brush, and look at the little icons, it's the sixth selection from the left, at least on my screen.

No special settings, it's just the default brush.

2. ^^ Just burning and dodging.

3. Actually, the only things that were on separate layers were as follows (generally):

Eyes+Mouth+Eyebrows
Yellow/Gold Detailing
Face
Neck+Body
Gray Background

Usually if I want a highlight on a color, say black, I'll get a new layer, make a highlight, and if I like it and it looks good on the black, I'll merge it with the black. So, usually, all the highlights that I do are usually merged with whatever they're supposed to be highlighting.

4. Yup! For the visor, I actually had about three layers to make the visor before I collapsed everything. It was basically taking that visor shape, filling it with blue and playing with layer effects. Layer effects like Linear Burn, Color Dodge, Pin Light, etc...

What can help you understand layer effects is simple. Go to photoshop, open a document, draw a big blue circle and fill it in with blue (whatever color you want). Make another layer and draw a thick red line on top. Click the layer that red line is on and change the effects and see how it looks on top of the blue circle. On your layers palate, right next to the opacity and fill, you'll notice a drop down menu that says "Normal." Just change normal to whatever you want, and you'll notice some fun effects.

5. It is just a metal texture that I found online. ^^ You'll notice that in the picture tutorial, I usually don't put a metal texture until I'm almost finished. Since I'm a person that likes to merge everything, the texture is something I wait on until I feel that my picture is almost ready.

It's no problem! I'm glad that you liked it.

Thank you so much, that little bit of info really helped me understand! I just had a few more specific questions based on the previous questions.

1. So was all your shading/ highlighting done with the dodge/ burn tool or was it just in places where you needed soft shading?

2. Out of those layer effects, was there a specific one you used?

3. Was the metal texture just placed over the entire image of Prowl or was it incorporated into different layers before merging?

Just on a personal note, I think I'm going to try and make a Blackarachnia with this tutorial (based more on her BW incarnation, but with a little bit of TFA). Thanks again for giving insight into your artistic talent!

dou-hong In reply to Destron23 [2011-11-06 03:38:00 +0000 UTC]

1. Most, if not all shading was done with Dodge/Burn. I find it cleaner than if I try to make another layer and apply some color. However, when it comes to certain colors, sometimes dodge/burn doesn't work that well, but it works hella good with white/black/gray.

2. Ones that give you a good bright effect like the section that contains linear dodge and color dodge.

3. I like to wait until there is relatively few details to add before adding the metal texture. It's a lot easier to put a metal texture on one layer that contains everything rather than applying metal texture to 5+ layers.

I wish you good luck! When you do yours, make mistakes. I swear, that's the best way of learning. Don't worry about making it so polished, because you'll drive yourself crazy. ^^ Let me know when you finish! I'd love to see it!
