Your implication is that her artwork isn't good enough unless she puts backgrounds into it. There's nothing wrong with it the way it is. If she wants to do backgrounds, she'll do them, and I think that's they key thing, here. It's her artwork. If she wants to draw backgrounds, she will. She shouldn't HAVE to draw backgrounds because you, or I, or anyone else, says that her art isn't "good enough" without backgrounds. Her artwork doesn't require backgrounds in order to be fantastic artwork.
To look at it in terms of another form of art: If I knit socks out of a solid colour of yarn, they're still great socks. I don't need to "improve" by knitting socks with colourwork or lace patterns. The socks that I knit the way I wanted to knit them are just fine the way they are, and are the socks that I wanted to knit. If I WANT to knit socks with colourwork, then I'll do so. But it's my art, and my choice.

Yes, that's exactly what I'm implying actually! I find it to be such a waste to have these incredibly cool looking characters living in very bland and boring worlds. Since I have yet to see a fully detailed and realised world in this artists gallery. Sure, there are backgrounds, but they are very simple and that makes the awesome characters stick out like sore thumbs. Not every picture needs a background, not at all - but it would be the most amazing thing to see her put these characters in really imersive and detailed backgrounds once in a while. I would be all over this artist if that was the case! And I'm pretty sure more people would. I've yet to see proof of that this artist actually can make those backgrounds happen. I feel like her potential is so much greater, because she is a very very talented artist.
You're saying that its her choice not to improve her backgrounds? I can't really argue with that.

Perhaps you don't mean it this way, but you're coming across as if you're saying that your opinion of her artwork is more important than her own, and that it has less artistic value because she isn't doing HER art the way YOU want her to do it.
I'm sure that her artwork would look stunning with detailed backgrounds. She doesn't choose to draw that way.

Yes, that's also what I'm implying xD From one artist to another - Sometimes the opinion of others can actually be good advice! I can't even count all the times where my friends have told me that there is something I should improve on and I've been like "No, I don't want to do that...", only to later on be like "Oh shit, I should've done this long ago..!". Because I have been so used to this one way of doings things that I've been afraid to do something new.
I don't think opinions like mine really hurt artists like this as much as you think. Saying that she chooses not to make her art even more impressive just doesn't sound good in my ears you know?

My apologies for the thread hijacking, but...
She can do detailed backgrounds. I can vouch for this. I also believe that detailed backgrounds need a lot of time, a lot of pre-planning (you have to plan the background before the characters if you're going that route), and if she's juggling commissions and real life, she might not have much time to devote to doing that for a lot of pictures. Already, she said she's been so busy that she doesn't even doodle as much as she wants to from her comment for this deviation. Yes, it would be good if you get to see that more often, but I think it's a artist's personal choice and there's nothing wrong with that.
Mind, too, that stuff like that takes time for each artist and their own plateauing. Many of my favorite watched artists online do not have detailed backgrounds, but their character portrayal is immense. Hell, even one of my favorite artists, J.C. Leyendecker, did not often do detailed backgrounds. He only did enough to service the focal point of the characters, but he did a smash bang-up job on the people he portrayed. It makes his art no less artistic and it holds no less merit for being so. Doubleleaf is Doubleleaf and that is why her art is a standout to me. I would not ask her to be like everyone else to prove the merit of her artwork.

Well, that tree scene you see up there? That's as far as this artist goes when it comes to background : ) Aka minimal shading and detail. You can check the rest of the gallery if you don't believe me xD

naw i watch this person and i love the tree thing up in the corner, it doesn't seam like its done though at least yet I'd like to see it finished but as for background i guess so just a bright space of color. I think, however, it would be best to go to a pic that is finished and give it a constructive criticism and tell them how they could improve and perhaps provide links. Telling someone they need improvement without explaining why or how generally either comes off as rude, ignored, or just not understood because it's not backed up. (that's what my teachers teach us in art class btw)

Well, I've given her a couple of detailed critique on her finished art. But I get the feeling she won't listen even if you gave cunstructive and detailed criticism. I'm guessing she plays it safe because a minimal amount of people will tell her that she needs to improve on backgrounds because she's famous. Why listen to the criticism and waste time on improving an area you're not familiar with when you can draw things you know how to draw all day long?Β
Her characters look absolutely amazing and the anatomy are more often than not flawless - Which is why I think it's such a shame that these characters will have to live in such bland and empty worlds ):

I can understand that though I, myself, strive to be better and wish that people would help me. I'd be happy to have a comment or more on my pieces telling me what they like and what to improve and how. I wish other artists, no matter their status, would listen to the "lesser" people. Sometimes people have great things to say, they just need to be listened to or taken to heart.

MLeth In reply to Vocol [2014-02-28 00:36:14 +0000 UTC]
Absolutely, it's easy to forget that these "lesser" folk often has very good things to say. It's easy to listen to the masses instead, though, and mistake a constructive comment for something bad. Sometimes you can do the most basic of mistakes on your art that you simply miss and that's when it's good to have another set of eyes to help you out! :3

Exactly, for example, I love my style though I want to improve it but I don't know how to because I don't really exactly know what to do or what I should improve. Though, when I do get critiqued I have never really had a comment that I thought was bad unless it was totally negative and very obvious like name calling.
