they didn't, he was always going to be Clay, just in the French comic they called him Micheal, and made him ALIVE so it's not considered part of the story at all

i'm from Poland and it's true that long time ago templars were here, there is a legend that in Poland is their hidden treasure we don't have eagle on the flag but on national emblem
