The point of the masks was so that they could put various herbs, such as lavender, in the beaks to block out the smell of burning bodies. You ever smell burning hair. It almost makes you want to throw up. Believe me.

Actually they wore those masks because they stuck some smelling herbs in the beak for a reason I cannot recall. It did have something to do with the black plague though, o that I am certain.

It's the reverse-Psychology. No one would expect an assassin to dress in BRIGHT WHITE ROBES. Besides, I bet ignoring assassins is part of their job descriptions. I mean, they're guards! They're supposed to ignore assassins.

Most doctors lived in the Middle Ages used to wear such masks (filled with herbs, and sometimes resin ashes... to "be safe from diseases"). Their "beak" could've been very long (0,5 meter?).

I love this picture you have no idea. I love these doctors, I've done so much research on their most famous time. Plus main characters wounded X3
I'm no expert on the Black Plague but I do know a thing or two. Such as like others have said, at the tips of the beaks were various herbs. They believed that by putting those there and only smelling pleasant air that meant that they couldn't become infected. When really it wasn't airborne, in some cases. The typical B.Plague wasn't contagious through the air but developed forms of it were horribly contagious. Such as the Phenomena version of the B. Plague Flees and bodily fluids.
Also the time of AC2 was roughly 2oo years after the first sever Plague. There was another wave in the early 1600's. Not nearly as severe though. Their outfits during the plagues were equipped with canes and sticks to beat the sick people who came after them. Not kidding.
My question is, why is it that they still wear those outfits? I wonder if its just the common outfit, such as white cotton trench coats are for those in the U.S.? Or it could be that they still clung to their logic of disease, to keep their doctors eternally healthy?
Fun fact, did you know that the children's chant: Ring Around the Rosy was inspired/based off of the Bubonic/Black Plague?

Hahaha! The mask's "beak" was filled with filters to keep the doctors from catching the desease that their patient had... That's why they look so weird. Kinda reminds me of a crow, scary.
