Description
18" x 24" oil on canvas commissioned painting from several years back. Commissioned for the Flight Test Historical Foundation, this shows the first X-15 flight, which was an unpowered glide flight by Scott Crossfield (the first man to Mach 2) on June 8, 1959. Crossfield also piloted the first powered flight on September 17, 1959, and several flights after. For the painting, I was able to work closely with the pilot of the F-104A chase plane to get all the details correct. The X-15 went on to be the fastest, highest flying winged airplane until the Space Shuttle (4,520 mph and 67 miles altitude).
