Description
"... when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate..."Genesis 3:6
Acrylic on paper 12 x 16
Working on this piece was one of those odd experiences where I just couldn't get happy with Eve's face and redrew it again and again. Maybe my problem was that I didn't want her to be easily categorized into one race while at the same time conveying this expression of curiosity and hesitation. Anyway, I gave up then came back to it later and drew in the face you see here in just a few minutes. That's just the way it goes sometimes.

Thanks! That's fantastic, and I would be honored to have you take a look at what I plan to come up with. I do hope it will be an acceptable comparison!

I would like to re-draw this in my own style, if that's okay?
I like to check with the O.A. first(:

Sure, if you want to. I'd be interested to see what it looks like.

That is so beautiful. I love Eve's expression. It's like she's already giving in to her darker nature.

I was hoping to capture a mixture of hesitation from and fascination with sin that all of us exhibit at times. Since Eveβs nature at this time should have been free of any sinful desires, it is a real mystery though how she or Adam could have been enticed this way. I donβt doubt that it happened though, since evidence for it is all around us. Thanks very much for the compliment.

This is cool. While the devil is evil I love how much detail you put into him being a snake. I also love the girl. I think you did make her look multi racial. Not to mention the expression. I can't get my people to look nothing but happy or depressed. She looks like she is in a curious delight.

Thank you very much. It never ceases to amaze me how much even the tiniest details can affect a facial expression (especially if youβre working at a small size). I recently heard an artist, who does extraordinarily expressive faces, talk about how careful he has to be with them. He said he sometimes works on them for days without them being right. So donβt be discouraged if theyβre a challenge for you. I think they are for just about everyone.

I know. If you make a person happy, but change the eye brow it can make them seem michievious. Even if that isn't what you are going for. I agree with that artist. You do have to practice and work at them.

Thanks very much, though I'm not sure I see anything in the angle myself. It's just a standard medium shot.

Now that you describe her features that way, I can see it but I can't honestly claim I was consciously mixing those specific characteristics. I just tried to avoid giving her an overall look that would exclusively be identified with one race or another.

But I'm not sure it's very apparent in this black and white version. Maybe I'll do it in color someday.

Another type A personality? To work on her face that long... I feel your pain. But I do have to encourage you that the piece gives off a special flavor..and definitely amplifies what truly began all temptation, so a job well done!

No, I've been around enough type A's to know I'm not one. I don't typically struggle that long with a piece, but faces can be tricky when you want a specific look. I know of a few professionals who normally work pretty fast that've gotten hung up on them. It does encourage me that you think its effective though, so thanks very much.

ahhh, makes sense. Well, you captured it for sure. And you are most welcome.
I am just your typical Type A who will inevitably work on any given piece for hours- if it isn't right. Starting at 3amβ¦
