Description
I started this project back in October, when I got my hands on one of the new figures by Vexiphine (called 'Allison' ). It's a new model for Victoria 4 and looked perfect for my very own Light-Speed. I modelled her up, and the new figure was SO awesome to use, I modelled another SG member... and then another... then another...After a few weeks, I'd modelled over half my SG (LoneSTAR, located on Victory), so I kept going and ended up making 3D models of all 41 members.
I spent the last week putting together a setting for the characters, placing them in the all-too-familiar Atlas Park.
This is the final piece in small size. The actual image is 31" tall and 60" wide, as 200 dpi.

I love how this looks nothing like a Poser render. You're a true artist, man, been a fan since the early magic days.

AWESOME!!!
How processor intensive is this? Do you have them all in the same scene with the background, or did you render them separately?

I rendered them seperately. Cheating, I know... but it's the only way to get them all together without killing my computer.

haha, I understand. That would be a heck of a machine to work with all those models in one scene. It would have killed my computer too.

When I played, I was on Victory. Some of the commissions might be from Protector, though.

I've already modelled about a dozen of them, although future works are likely to focus on fewer characters for time reasons. That is, unless DC wants to me to do a complete group shot... at which point I won't even sleep til it's done! Heh.

I'll probably wait until I have a finished piece. I'm working on the background and want to place the founding 3 (at a minumum) in some sort of great-looking setting. I'll probably add a few other main characters in the background. The character models are already done, but the setting is taking longer than I anticipated. I'll be a few weeks before I show anything.

this piece is very reminiscent of the legion of Superheroes=]
What do you charge for commissions? If I gave you a character design, how much would it cost for you to render them and place them in a specific setting?

DouglasShuler In reply to thelearningcurv [2008-03-19 03:27:58 +0000 UTC]
I'm not agressivly accepting commissions at the moment, but I'm letting a few slip through. It would depend on the character, their complexity, the setting you wanted... stuff like that. Maybe send me a sample drawing of the costume? Or a screenshot if it's form a game? That'll give me an idea of what you have in mind.

Jesus christ Doug do you ever stop?
lol man i was wondering where ya took off too for so long but this explains all that away! I took about 20 minutes to look at this piece character by character and i am just soo impressed!
You clearly took your time getting everything in just the right place and you should be extremely proud of this one!
Gratz to you on this epic piece!
Gratz to Lonestar for 4 years of awesomeness as well!

Thanks a ton, Thor.
I spent a lot of time comparing my model to screenshots of the SG members. Then, when I thought I was done, I'd run the characters past my brother for nitpicks and approvals - it's good to have a second opinion. Some days, I'd get 2 or 3 characters done, while others I'd only get through 1 and the end seemed very far off.
Now that it's complete, I can start planning my next piece. Oh, who am I kidding... I know what my next 5 are gonna be already.

awesome work here man, so much work, and you can tell the effort gone into it. What is this, poser and you edit the skins in photoshop?
π: 0 β©: 1
DouglasShuler In reply to AngelCrusher [2008-02-02 00:50:00 +0000 UTC]
The base figures are Poser, but there's SO much more. I paint the skin and clothing textures in Photoshop, I model custom pieces in MAYA, and I render in Vue Infinite. Then finally, I go back to Photoshop to clean up wierd quirks that can appear. Each character is the result of 3 - 4 hours of work to assemble, and anywhere from 1 - 7 hours for the computer to render out.
π: 0 β©: 1
AngelCrusher In reply to DouglasShuler [2008-02-02 00:59:23 +0000 UTC]
whoa, thats quick, 3-4 hours for a character. I thought that modelling in maya would have taken longer, or just textures in photoshop would be time consuming. Next realised rendering takes that long, but i guess it depends on the pic. Must be a pain waiting that long for it.
π: 0 β©: 1
DouglasShuler In reply to AngelCrusher [2008-02-02 03:09:50 +0000 UTC]
The characters aren't each created from scratch - I use some pre-existing figures and then model the custom bits for each, like bracers and shoulderpads. As for the renders taking a long time, I usually set it up before I go to bed so I'm getting work done even when I sleep... lol. Talk about obsessive.
