Description

Valuri and Sorenna walked side by side as they made their way down the mountainside and into the meadow below. There were other horses hanging around, some grazing, some drinking from the narrow stream that ran through the meadow. The two were in no rush and meandered through the grassy meadow, grazing together and watching the other horses around them. The meadow was too low for snow so it was lush and green with grass. It was a bright day, rather warm for the middle of winter. And with a full belly and the warm sun on her back Sorenna ended up dozing off while Valuri grazed nearby, never straying too far from the napping mare.

After some time Sorenna awoke and asked the quite clingy Valuri for some alone time, she felt like taking a walk by herself. He reluctantly agreed and stayed put at the top of a small hill while Sorenna wandered down to the stream. She eyed the horses around her, watching them curiously until a specific pair caught her eye. A red mare and a small spotted foal. Perhaps it was the foals cuteness, or the mare’s kind eyes, or maybe it was just the curiosity since Sorenna would be having her own foal soon. Whatever it was she felt and urge to go over and greet the two.

The red mare was leaning down the stream bank and drinking when Sorenna approached. The little spotted foal stood behind her mothers legs, shyly eyeing the stranger. Sorenna paused for a moment, standing still, ears pricked forward and blowing gently in greeting. The red mare noticed Sorenna and lifted her head, she was a bit wary at first but after looking over Sorenna she quickly deemed her not a threat. The mare walked up from the stream bank and stopped a few feet away, her filly stumbling through her mothers legs as she tried to hide but still get a good look at the new horse.

“Hello.” The red mare said, gently bumping Sorenna’s nose.

“Hi!” She replied cheerily, feeling a bit lost for words now that she was in front of the new horse.

“Are you from the meadow here?” The mar asked, making light conversation.

“Oh, no I’m not, I’m with a stallion and we just came here to graze a bit and maybe make some new friends,” Sorenna explained, “Are you from the meadow?”

“Well as of right now yes, but I hope not for long, it’s not safe for my little filly when it’s just us on our own.” The red mare said, her voice turning worried as she bent her head down to look at her little foal.

“Right, of course! Well I really hope you both find a herd soon,” Sorenna said earnestly. She reached her head down to blow gently at the spotted filly, the foal reached out for a second and then gave a little squeal and duck behind her mother.

Both Sorenna and the red mare laughed lightly.

“She’s quite shy,” the red mar chuckled lovingly, turning to nuzzle her filly comfortingly, “say hello darling, she’s a friend.”

The filly took a stumbling step forward and stared up at Sorenna with big brown eyes. She gave a small snort and then leapt away, running little circles around her mom.

“She’s so precious,” Sorenna said longingly, watching the filly bound joyfully around, no more fear on her mind, just the long grass and warm sun as she played.

“Foals are indeed a treasure,” the red mare agreed, then she looked over at Sorenna once again and studied her for a few seconds, “Are you expecting?” The red mare asked softly.

Sorenna gave a happy snort, “Yes! This coming spring,” she said, her eyes full of excitement, “I can’t wait to have my own foal.”

The red mare gave Sorenna a knowing look, “I think you’ll be a wonderful mother, you really seem like that kind of mare,” she encouraged her.

Sorenna gave her tail a happy swish, “thank you, really.” She said the the red mare. Sorenna couldn’t have been happier to have met the lovely red mare and her filly. She had given her some encouragement that one could only get from a fellow mare.

The red mare gave her head a gentle toss and began grooming the Sorenna’s withers. Sorenna returned the friendly gesture and two mares stood contentedly in the warm sun, watching the spotted filly run laps until she grew tired and came back to plop herself by her mothers hooves. She was fast in seconds.

“That’s pretty much all there is to foals, eat, run, and sleep lot.” The red mare whispered to Sorenna, and they both giggled quietly.
