Description Transformers WERE actually created by a Spaghetti Monster!

One thing I always found fascinating about Transformers was the theology of it. But something I've found even more fascinating was the debate on the theology of it. Mostly surrounding the origins of your favorite transforming robots.
First we are told about the Quintessons, and how Cybertron was a giant factory to manufacture robots. Then Furman would add an almost religious tone to the mythos with the addition of a Spark and the story of Primus and Unicron.

I personally prefer the Quints idea. It just makes more sense, giving the Transformers a chance to evolve from humble beginnings and bring themselves up to the point where they are now. Also, having the Autobots be consumer goods and the Cons military hardware makes more sense in the grand scheme of things because rather than have a grand creator make them all first and then they magically choose sides, you are giving them a core programing, or a "nature" that they simply can't escape by mere choice, which can justify a war that spans millions of years.

Of course, this is only my opinion, and I'm sure many of you out there will chime in with your 2ยข, making this debate even more fascinating. After all, this is cartoon religion . Ahh the ridiculousness of it.

As for the piece itself, I always wanted to do a twist in Michelangelo's birth of Man piece illustrating the Quints in the Godly position. I did the piece in rendered pencil first, adding color through Photoshop thinking it'd be easier. I guess it was, after I got used to the whole mess. By the way, for as much as I hated the Quints when I was a kid, they sure were fun to draw. So how about bringing them back IDW... And bring on the Sharkticons while you're at it.

Anyways... enjoy!

Okay, I'll admit it. When I first saw this, I laughed because I recognized the Michaelangelo reference in the thumbnail I got in the Deviations messages-- BRILLIANT! I love this pic!!

And then I squealed extra-hard, thanks to Plenoptic07's and Tessombra's comments! Freaking Quintessions just HAD to design him so HOT, didn't they?!

I have to agree with you. I think the whole deity concept was just too much. Not that I'm a canon queen or anything, but the Quintesson line makes more sense. It makes mores sense why the 'Cons went rogue and explains the 'Bots' basic programming. Even if you have to have 'female' bots, it makes sense they were built with 'gender' slant to better relate to their owners.

And yeah, okay -- the Quints were DAMN good designers - Prime IS hot. My favorite color IS chrome.

I'm a gear head. I saw the actual truck they used for the movie--nice piece--but they unfortunately wouldn't let me 'under' the hood.

I've always prefered the comic book version of the transformers creation, with them having been created by their God Primus to combat his opposite, the dark God Unicron. There are no factions until much later after generations of peace, when Megatron leads the Decepticons into vengeful revolt against what Cybertronian society had become. This also explains how metal robotic beings can have sentience.

The cartoon version seems to be for a much younger audience.

Nice lines and colours by the way.

Well, that's the thing. I think the whole addition of a spark to the lore and the whole Primus / Unicron creation matrix, leadership matrix and all the other additions from the comic-verse are sooooo convoluted.

I also found it (as a comic book fan) that something as immensely significant as the existence of robotic Gods would have a more noticeable impact on the then Marvel Universe. I don't know, it kind of made no sense. Plus I think that that's the biggest issue I've had with the whole comic logic to their sentience, if you are completely free as a being to pick and choose, then wouldn't you just omit yourself from the whole factions scenario and simply not fight? That's the thing that I can accept from the Quint angle, that if it's part of your core programing, it kinda makes sense why this war has gone on for millions of years while still allowing the characters to evolve into sentience a la Cyberdine in Terminator (yeah yeah, I know, but it's better than saying Johnny 5 in Short Circuit )

Glad you liked it!

The spark is the TF equivallent to a soul, which would be logical for a sentient to possess. I don't think Primus & Unicrons original forms were metal.

Anyway, if the Quints made the TF's, who made them? Also, how could they create something as complex as Transformers, the machines and tooling that come with production process, keep the Sharticons enslaved, without limbs and having just a rotating ball with 5 or 6 heads attached for a body?

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

dovianax In reply to hellbat [2010-05-04 19:07:37 +0000 UTC]

I agree that I don't mind the existence of the spark. Though it creates a continuity nightmare because how do you account for all the Transformers that have been "built" by other Transformers? They have no soul?

Well, the Quintessons as a race came in different body types [link] , including, guards, scientists, enforcers, etc... The more famous one is the judge, but he wasn't the only one. Also, they did have limbs, they had tentacles, which could be more convenient to getting into those hard to reach nooks and crannies when building sophisticated machinery than 2 limbs.

As far as I know, all TFs built by other TFs are given life (sparks) through matrix energy.

Yeah I remember all those other Quints now. My mistake.

Have you read the marvel G2 series?

dovianax In reply to hellbat [2010-05-06 19:02:49 +0000 UTC]

Well, that's the thing... that just works great if you're an Autobot and have a matrix, but what if you're a Con? Also, what if you're of no faction and simply want to propagate the species?

At least with the Quint idea, Transformers merely needed to access the power of Vector Sigma to create a new life, Bot or Con. Though even that seemed a bit complicated. When it comes to procreation I honestly like the protoform concept that started in Beast Wars and continued in TFA the best.

And yeah, I use to have the G2 books. Though I barely remember them by now.

If you read the G2 series (which I think was the best TF comic series ever) again, you'll see that Cybertronions can actually reproduce. Also, the only time I remeber the matrix actually being used to create new bots is when Shockwave uses it to give give life to Decepticon reinforcements.

I like the protoform concept too.

Um, as much as I know I should be admiring the artwork itself, or at least contemplating TF theology, I'm kinda captivated by Optimus's sexy-licious pose there...I mean, just throw in an Elita-One leaning over him and it'd be HAWT

That aside, I LOVE all the color and detail...it's a very inspired and super cool piece ^^ Way to BE.

HAHAHAH!!! Thanks!

Well, being it a homage to Birth of Man, I obviously had to mimic the pose.

Glad you liked it.

Awesome!
I've jotted down a few ideas on the whole Qintesson/Primus issue and yes, the Quintesson origin grants a greater depth to the entire Transformer history.

You know I've been puzzled how they were built and how side one became Good for Justice and Evil for Destruction.

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

dovianax In reply to the-Sleuth [2010-05-03 17:53:26 +0000 UTC]

Well, that's why I like the Quints origin. It simplifies it to the point of just saying it's what there programmed for, while allowing for character growth once they develop a consciousness and rebel against the Quints. Hurrayy, there free now, and peace comes to Cybertron, but eventually the military hardware is gonna want to live up to it's nature, so it's inevitable.

I just think it wraps things up in a nice package without convoluting it with all the "God of Destruction" crap.
