ZM0926 Hot Chilli Pepper and Andrés Morton at Cronenburgs Dressage Zlesnic
---
What they’d like to work on:
Andrés is a pretty experienced rider, and is used to his mare being spicy but they would like to work on smoother transitions, refining rider cues and reactions to seem more controlled.
How invested they are:
Chilli is pretty fresh and challenging today, and because Andrés is trying to act a little cool and maybe a bit cocky, she is taking full advantage to try to get away with doing her own thing. After learning from this mistake (the hard way LOL), Andrés becomes much more invested and continues on with much better control of his reactions, his mare’s cues and in the clinic generally.
---Andrés liked to think he was pretty confident, generally speaking. Despite living on his family’s private island and the inevitable isolation that entailed, he was charismatic and charming, and knew his own and his horse’s abilities well enough to find friends at clinics. That was more or less the reason he attended this dressage training event at Cronenburg. Act cool, be casual, make connections. If he and his mare learned something, that would be a bonus, but the young man wasn’t the type to study too hard if he could help it. Such a task would be easy enough if his mareish mount wasn’t in such a bad mood.
When Chilli was nice, she was very nice. But when she was not, she was pretty horrid, in riding terms. Small warning bunnyhops and bucks were just a sign of freshness, nothing Andrés couldn’t handle. As they strode the perimeter of the arena, in what was supposed to be a walk, the mare would simply decide on moving at her own pace and leapt into a faster gait. Upon some stern coaxing, she would stick a red tongue out in protest; a dramatic reaction to a very light pull on reins, that Andrés could only hope didn’t seem harsher than it was. The last thing he wanted was for his stroppy steed’s bluffing to reflect poorly on them both. Playfully then, the burgundy-haired man would stick his own tongue back out at the chestnut, matching her energy.
Usually, Chilli would feign a tantrum with a half-baked buck, just like this, and then she would return to normal, ready to get some real training underway. She was a spicy mare, but full of hot air. Her threats to actually throw Andrés off her back were almost always bluffs, so the tall man continued on with a roll of his eyes, shooting an apologetic glance at Kaira who he was sure must have had the patience of a saint until a lit dynamite of a zlesdin used the last of her fuse.
Chilli wasn’t bluffing, and before he could react, a charcoal-breeched backside hit the sand with a thud.
Mortifying, truly. The whole point of this trip was to work on some transitions and look dashing doing so, perhaps get in with whatever dressage clique was popular these days and there he sat, looking a complete fool. Sure, a part of him felt like being mad at his mare, and a small part of him felt like swearing under his breath and hiding on his island for the rest of his life in embarrassment. Andrés was a little too smart to act on impulse though. A good recovery is always better than running from problems. And so, while still on the ground, he would achily drag himself up, cross his legs and whistle. A pair of long, slender red ears swivelled on a pretty chestnut head, towards her companion’s beckon. Slowly, gingerly as if she already knew she had been naughty, Chilli stepped over to Andrés, head dipped to nuzzle his hand.
“Well that was a bit rude, wasn’t it, Ms Chilli?”
Andrés’ tone was calm, and soothing, and the mare seemed more docile with every word, ears resting sidewards and big brown eyes lidding with contentment. After a soft scratch under the chin, the pair were ready to try again, with much more success now that the fresh princess was a little more relaxed.
“I probably should have lunged her before this, my apologies.”
With a charming smile, Andrés said sorry to Kaira for his horse’s little hissyfit, continuing right where he left off, albeit with more focus and control; content for now to pretend nothing ever happened.
