“No.”

Jim uttered this one word sternly, not even looking up from his book, beyond which a pleading pair of hazel eyes stared up at him. Molly had asked the old vet countless times the same question, and he still wouldn’t budge on it. All she wanted was to take Beast to a show. It was halter, and something nice and easy, something they both knew the handsome grey horse wouldn’t do too badly in. Usually, Jim wouldn’t have minded at all, but when he asked where the show was taking place, he immediately became dismissive of the idea. He’d heard of the stable hosting a Barbie-themed event, and he knew that would mean his horse being turned into a dressup doll.

“You’re not dressing up my horse in some silly costume. How am I supposed to compete internationally on a Grand Prix dressage horse after everyone’s seen him like that?”

Immediately after he spoke, a rumbling cough ripped through Jim’s lungs, weakening his whole frame enough to drop his book. As the pair of them sat in his livingroom, with the fire lit for the frail man as early as late summer, it became quite apparent to them both how pointless that excuse was. The grey man wasn’t going to live quite long enough to compete internationally that often anyway. And so, with a shared understanding despite how sure the older man seemed, Molly chanced asking one more time in the softest, sweetest voice.

“...please..?”

A gruff response echoed from the tall vet, lifting his book once more to signal the discussion was over, for now. He was just too tired to argue.

“Win that showjumping competition and we’ll see”

A ribbon and a trophy from the Carpathian Showjumping Festival were proudly featured in a display case now, and with that, an equally great reward - the blessing to dress the tall draught up in whatever the young woman wanted. Molly had watched all the Barbie movies of the early 2000s, and it was always difficult to pick a favourite. In the end, the theme she settled on would be Princess and the Pauper. Besides being a great movie in its own right, it would be a perfect inspiration for a joint costume for her and Beast, one that she would make by herself. It wasn’t perfect, at all, but it did the job and sparkled.

Glitter will have been spilt all over the soft sand as the two trotted, and fake flower petals too. Despite looking like the prettiest princess, Beast seemed distracted, arching his thick neck towards the mare and foal pasture where a pretty black mare called for him. Molly would have no idea of the horses’ little midnight rendezvous in the Netherlands, or that the mare carried his foal, but she would still take the stud over to his ‘friend’ to say greet her by the fence once the event was over, much to the two horse’s obvious delight.
