1. Doesn't work. Been there done that! I even had a Patreon page at some point and that didn't work either.
2. This is actually what I'm doing but not everyone can pay as they either don't have money to spend on something like this or they're underage and don't have a credit card or they're from a country where they aren't able to pay.
So for these people I'm giving my themes for free but they have to at least make an effort to leave a comment and ask for the download link and also spread the word around about my work.
It's a win-win for everyone
