Story time!

Iggy tried very hard to herd Weaton over to the snack room when he heard Chrome say something about the possibility of hurting oneself. It sounded like the sort of thing Weaton would do, and it was best to head this sort of thing off early.

Weaton, at least, shared that sentiment. “I, uh…I have a…track record of…um…blowing labs up.”

“No Bunsen burner for you then,” Chrome said, grabbing one and distancing it from Weaton.

“That wasn’t…right.” Weaton stopped at a station and stared at it, ignoring Iggy tugging on his pants leg. “So….”

An apron, a pair of gloves, and a pair of goggles suddenly collided with Weaton’s face.

“Safety first!”

“Oh boy,” Weaton muttered.

As it turned out, the gloves were not enough to protect the plants from Weaton’s influence.

“Well, I guess we can only go up from here,” Weaton supposed, looking at the myriad sharp objects in the immediate area. Iggy felt that tempting Murphy’s Law was not a good idea, but didn’t comment.

But things went on without much difficulty or explosions or fires, and the rest of Weaton’s Pokémon started drifting off to see what the others were doing, or to make use of that ‘snack bar’ Chrome had mentioned. Weaton even seemed to be enjoying himself.

“You know,” he said finally, mixing two things together. “I think this might be the first lab I ever took where I didn’t make something—”

“THAT IS ENOUGH!”

This startled Weaton into dropping everything, which subsequently exploded. Everywhere.

“AAA!” Benny yelled, running over to them with a cup of something. “What happened!?”

“I don’t know,” Iggy coughed. Weaton, meanwhile, was staring at the scorch mark on the lab table.

“Well, I almost made it,” he sighed, before glancing over at the other table, where Roy was working—and looking red in the face. And with his Pokémon giggling at him for good measure.

Totem righted himself from where he went flying. “My psychic senses tell me that Roy had something to do with this. Did you hear what he and his Pokémon were discussing?”

“No,” Iggy said, wiping his face off. “Because I don’t make it a habit to eavesdrop on trainers that aren’t mine.”

Totem shrugged, used Psychic to turn the faucet on so he could start with a birdbath. Iggy, meanwhile, sighed.

It was too much to ask for a quiet day, wasn’t it?

It was some time later when Roy came over.

“Hey, Weaton, are you okay?” he asked.

“Me? I’m fine, perfect, dandy,” Weaton said, in that much-too-quick way of his, that he adopted whenever he was nervous. “I’m good—you know, I was expecting…haa…well, I’m good for blowing things up.”

Roy nodded. “Maybe we should look into teaching you about explosives—”

A resounding NO came from everyone who was within earshot—Weaton included.

“Fine,” Roy said, waving him off. “Um…I’m not sure how much of that you heard earlier….”

“Uh, what?” Weaton asked. “I didn’t hear anything—nothing at all. No.”

“That sounded like a strangely specific denial.”

“I didn’t! Honest! LaLia was talking to you, and isn’t psychic stuff kind of one of those specific things?”

Roy wobbled his head. “Okay. But if you did hear anything, don’t tell Chrome—I want it to be a surprise?”

“Surprise? What would you want to be a sur—” Weaton cut off abruptly. “I’m gonna shut up now.”

“Good,” Roy said, giving him a wink. “Remember, don’t say anything! It’s a surprise!”

And with that, Roy headed back to his station.

Weaton fidgeted for a long time before sitting down on the floor so he was even with Iggy.

“I hate this,” Weaton told him. “Those were the worst words I ever heard in college—‘don’t say anything.’ Because invariably, I do say something, and then I ruin it for everybody. I hate keeping secrets—I’m not even sure what it is I’m keeping!”

Iggy settled for patting Weaton on the knee.

“Is it that whole ‘Roy and Chrome are a thing’ that everyone but Roy and Chrome know? ‘Cause it’s not really a secret…I don’t know. I don’t even know what I think about all that.”

Iggy rolled his eyes, progressed to tugging on Weaton’s pants leg, pointed at Creedence floating around and eating a big tub of popped-Cornn as he looked at what everyone was doing.

“You want I should stop him?” Weaton asked. Iggy shook his head, patted his stomach. “Oh. Right. Why don’t we do that.”

Much better. And get them away from that smelly work station.

Because there was something there, ever since the explosion, that made Iggy’s hackles raise….

But he shrugged it off and herded Weaton over to the snacks.

They’d figure it out later.

Anywho—for this week, we experiment on what we gathered….Dianamond gave me an interesting prompt, which was good, because what I had in mind wasn’t all that great. Now if only I could get myself in sync with the current time, seeing as how once it gets dark now, I only have a few hours….

Weaton's lament near the end mirrors a similar experience I had in college--worst thing ever to hear is 'don't tell anybody, but...." Because invariably, you end up in an elevator with the person who the secret's about and you nearly choke on your own tongue trying to keep it from slipping out and ruining everything. And then we have Weaton, who tends to babble on when he's nervous....

Also referenced Dianamond 's piece --figured since Roy planned on coming over to see what Weaton had to say, he'd also check to see what Weaton heard.

And kept the ending open, just in case there needed to be a sinister spin on next week's event....
