Is the warrior crouched in hiding, or has he already been rendered stone? I like the coloring. It makes the Basilisk seem the defender, somehow humanizing it. The hands/claws help this effect. I really enjoy this piece. Thank you for sharing it.

The warrior is just crouching. Yeah I think the rap of beasts being malicious isn't always the case. Often stories come from the people afraid of them.

It would be an interesting set of pieces, to illustrate two images opposing. One side would be how the tale is related to everyone by the survivor. The other would be how it actually happened. A hero of adventure survives an encounter with a dragon, while he sought to rob the drake of all his golden hoard. When he relates the story to some avid listeners in a tavern somewhere, the dragon becomes a demonic titan, filled with sharp teeth, and armored in crimson plate. When you view the illustration of how it actually happened, the impression is more that the dragon died in a home invasion, and the storytelling adventurer was a common bandit.
