Like photoshops bucket tool pattern or just want a pattern brush. Use this method to get that effect. I'm going to use a screentone texture that is inverted.
- Go to your paint tool sai Folder
- Open Brushtex folder
- Open a bmp image in photoshop or sai
- decorate it in greyscale. You can see my texture above, it's was done in photoshop as render difference clouds. Rename the file to something you will remember. I called mine Lightening because when it's used it looks a bit like lightening or coffee stains.
- open the CONF file called Brushtex. Open it in Notepad. It will look something like this>>
- write this: 1,brushtex\[the name of your bmp file].bmp Make sure on the end up the image file name. Exactly like in the image above. Mine was lightening so I wrong it: 1,brushtex\lightening.bmp and after you write this, close and save, don't save as just save. This tells sai where you put your texture and where sai can find it. Now you can open sai. If you had it open before, close and re-open.
- Open sai
- Go here to find your texture>>
- There's the texture ready for use, test it
- Done, it will always be there now.
- If you decide to get rid of it or stop using it for a while, go to the brushtex file and delete the command line you put in there and it won't show up in sai.
Enjoy <3

Here's a screencap: link The file is a bmp and as you can see in the thumbnail it's in greyscale.

Make the v and capital V in the CONF file and try again and it will work. It has to be exactly as the name of the file or Sai can't find and read it

Both V's were already capitals. I redid the V in the CONF file just to make sure and there was no change after I'd saved it and restarted sai.

Sai has been closed and restarted for each change? And you're using the sai from that location?

Yes for both. I've just tried restarting my laptop as well, because it can get a bit weird sometimes, but the texture still refuses to work. It's strange, because it shows up with my other textures, but just won't affect the brush when I select it XD

In my Sai when I first did it I also didn't realise that I had to scroll down quite a bit before I found the brush texture. It was hiding under canvas.

Oh I see. I have no idea what is wrong because it should work, espcially if you are using the sai exe file from the folder you've edited. When's the last time you updated Sai? I recently this year got an update patch. That might help.

Sai doesn't send you the updated version when you purchase it, you have to do it manually. And no problem, thank you for your patience as well. I just wish I could help.

you have to type in the text spelled and typed out exactly as done with the image in the tutorial except with the exact file name of the bmp image you are trying to use, it must be spelled exactly the same as you named it and the image must be within the centre most area. So the image must be in the brush texture folder as a .bmp file and the command must be written in the brushtex config file or it will not work and the texture will only work for brushes not layers. Note me a screencap if you can of the trouble you're having.

What do you mean by: 'edit the confg file and save as confg'?

DraconianRain In reply to Wera013 [2013-06-16 01:04:45 +0000 UTC]
at bullet point 5, you have to follow editing the CONF file and saving exactly or it won't work. It tells sai where the texture is to use it. You can't save the file as a txt file it has to be the same format, a CONF file or it won't work.

Oh, okay, I get it Last question - how to do this? I can change it only in txt file... (sorry for problem)

you open it in notepad. Change it. After you make the change click on the 'x' and save. Don't save as. Make sure SAI is closed and then re-open sai. You should then find the texture with other textures working in SAI.
Sorry for the late reply. I've been busy.

it won't work if you don't edit the confg file and save as confg. This method will only work if you type in the command line 100% correct. Check for any spelling errors and if the image is in the right folder.
