Like photoshops bucket tool pattern or just want a pattern brush. Use this method to get that effect. I'm going to use a screentone texture that is inverted.

  • Go to your paint tool sai Folder
  • Open Brushtex folder

  • Open a bmp image in photoshop or sai

  • decorate it in greyscale. You can see my texture above, it's was done in photoshop as render difference clouds. Rename the file to something you will remember. I called mine Lightening because when it's used it looks a bit like lightening or coffee stains.
  • open the CONF file called Brushtex. Open it in Notepad. It will look something like this>>

  • write this: 1,brushtex\[the name of your bmp file].bmp Make sure on the end up the image file name. Exactly like in the image above. Mine was lightening so I wrong it: 1,brushtex\lightening.bmp and after you write this, close and save, don't save as just save. This tells sai where you put your texture and where sai can find it. Now you can open sai. If you had it open before, close and re-open.
  • Open sai
  • Go here to find your texture>>

  • There's the texture ready for use, test it

  • Done, it will always be there now.
  • If you decide to get rid of it or stop using it for a while, go to the brushtex file and delete the command line you put in there and it won't show up in sai.

Enjoy <3

If you're not using a legitimate and paid for version then this would play a huge role in why it's not working. In which case I can not help you. Also, make sure you close and re-open Sai when making major changes.

I want to ask do you still have that texture in the last part?
It looks so awesome and I want to try use it for drawing some clothes with pattern like that

Sorry I don't, but all I did was use something like photoshop or clip paint studio and used a filter called clouds or difference clouds, turned it grey scale and inverted it. With sai textures to work they generally need to be inverted and black and white bitmap (.bmp file)

The only thing I can think of is that it's not saved as a CONF file extension anymore. I would recommend re-saving as a CONF just incase

Just to make sure did you close and restart Sai? A couple of times this has been the issue and was everything exact and in the exact folders of where the program runs? Some people have a double install and have added the textures in the wrong installed folder. I'm sorry for the questions but I need to know.

DraconianRain In reply to Drshadowanddarkness [2016-06-01 06:38:20 +0000 UTC]

Sorry for taking so long to reply. Well, right click and there should be an option called "Open With.." use this to open it up with notepad. It should be listed there or the "find other similar apps" option after clicking "Open with". If that doesn't work you could always select the start menu, type notepad, open it up and browse your way to the files.

I see .. thanks .. btw, the file extention would be .conf.bak or .conf only ? and thank you for the reply :3

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

DraconianRain In reply to Drshadowanddarkness [2016-06-01 07:47:28 +0000 UTC]

You're welcome. This is an old tutorial for an older version of Sai where it was just .CONF so I apologise if the extension is confusing. Stick with .CONF and if that doesn't work you can go back and change it to .CONF.bak just be sure to edit the extension text it in the same way it appears when saving and make sure not to acidentally save it as a text file. If your program shows the extension names in caps then write it out in caps. It's different for each person. Also no probs.

Hello, I did follow these instructions, but the brush just appears as a normal blob like you'd use the airbrush. How can I fix this?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

DraconianRain In reply to Musically-art-tastic [2015-10-21 11:14:02 +0000 UTC]

The only thing I can think of is either your texture is too dark or there's a spelling error. The brush texture line of code has to be exact otherwise it won't work and everything in their appropriate folders. What image file type did you use?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Musically-art-tastic In reply to DraconianRain [2015-10-24 05:06:37 +0000 UTC]

The files were originally JPEG but I resaved them as BMP. They did work in Photoshop CS3 but it doesn't work in Sai? The images were also originally black and white when I got them from Pixiv

DraconianRain In reply to Musically-art-tastic [2015-10-25 01:54:35 +0000 UTC]

Is the file with the code saved as a CONFG file and not a txt file?

Musically-art-tastic In reply to DraconianRain [2015-10-25 11:03:16 +0000 UTC]

The one you open with the notepad? It's saved as CONFG.

DraconianRain In reply to Musically-art-tastic [2015-10-28 08:42:24 +0000 UTC]

I'm not sure what else it could be. If everything is as followed and the spelling is 100% exact to the image file including the use of caps or lowercase letters, it should work regardless.

DraconianRain In reply to CucumberSempai [2015-04-08 22:48:22 +0000 UTC]

No this is a how to make texture brushes. Sorry for the confusion but, it's pretty clear that it's about making a texture file specifically for Sai to recognise. If you want a tutorial for how to make just textures there's plenty here on DA or youtube. I don't have any tutorials on making textures sorry since there's enough out there already on how to make them by drawing, scanning or using the filters provided in photoshop or the GIMP. Most textures are drawn either by hand or the use of a plugin or simple things such as taking photo's or scanning in paper, lace etc and I would only be recovering what's already been posted by many others.

DraconianRain In reply to Poyuran [2015-02-01 01:27:24 +0000 UTC]

I know what you mean and I personally find it difficult to do. I can only recommend searching youtube for "How to make seamless tileable textures" or "How to make seamless textures". DA has a few good tutorials about it already. Here's a two I could find on how to do it. If you don't have photoshop, free program the GIMP can do the same thing. Unfortunately I can't help you make them seamless, I never mastered it but I can try to help or help you look if you get stuck. Sorry I couldn't be of any more help. Also try making your texture the size of your biggest drawing size so it's one whole texture instead of tiling ones. The size of your texture matters greatly.

You're doing very well. I can understand you fine. Sometimes I get questions on my tutorials in other languages and I have to use google translate to understand them. I don't like to ignore people. I try to help everyone.

I wish I could speak another language but we don't have any courses where I live. It's very difficult to find a teacher that teaches the language you want to learn.

Hello I've followed the instructions and the texture is showing up with the default textures that sai comes with, but whenever I select the new texture it doesn't seem to affect the brush at all. I've got the brush texture strength set to 100 and all of the other textures are working.

ibbitmonster In reply to Featherblaka [2014-09-07 22:33:04 +0000 UTC]

I'm not sure if you're still having the problem of getting your brushtex files to work in SAI, but I was having the same issue (I googled this tutorial to figure out how to make one in the first place) and finally figured it out after a half-hour of trial and error.

Whenever you go into Photoshop (I'm assuming that's what you're using) to create your brushtex, make sure to go to Image > Mode and select "Indexed Color" when you are all done, then hit "okay" when the dialog popup shows up. When you save it as a .BMP now it will save as 8-bit and it SHOULD work. That's what it took to get mine working, anyway lol. Hope that helps!

Featherblaka In reply to ibbitmonster [2014-09-10 08:56:10 +0000 UTC]

I don't have photoshop, so that might be what's causing the problem. Thank you

DraconianRain In reply to Featherblaka [2014-08-30 03:02:09 +0000 UTC]

You need to make sure your spelling is 100% correct and you used a bmp file. If there is even one mistake, maybe even an extra space it will not work. It is case sensitive as well. If you could send me a screencap of what you wrote and the texture name in the folder and I'll see if I can help. Also it must be greyscale and not colour.
