First you need a new line art layer and to use the vector tools provided. Use the curve tool and edit tool to create your speech bubble shapes.
Below in red is where to find the line art layer. Click it to create a new line art or Vector Layer.
On the new line art layer, click four points in a rought squared egg shape like below in the large red square. Use the curve tool to make this shape. The curve tool is marked in a little red box to the left of the image below.
Now select the edit tool. Then from the middle of each point, click and hold then drag outwards to create a new point and deform your shape into a rough circle. You may need to change between your edit options to edit the shape. Translate should be fine to do most of the shaping.
Then you can use the curve tool to ad the speech bubble tail. That's all there is to making speech bubbles in sai. Of course you can draw them by hand but using these tools you can get closer to a circle shape. Enough time and patience you can create a smooth ellipsis or circle. Also use the pressure tool to add thick to thin strokes on your line art. Just like the edit tool, click and drag the points to edit the stroke pressure.
For spikey speech bubbles draw a basic ellipsis on it's own layer and then use the line art layer's Line Tool and Pressure tool to make the spiked bubble. Copy and paste some spikes and put them closer together if you want to save some time but the closer they get the harder it gets to edit the points.
Any questions feel free to ask.

This was really helpful! Used it here:-
Question though, how do you make the lines have prickly ends? (referring
to the 'spiky speech bubble'.)

by chance how would this work for thought bubbles & other types?

DraconianRain In reply to ZekuDraws [2017-01-31 09:53:29 +0000 UTC]
Very well. Because it behaves like vector it's much easier to edit, it would just require more points and careful planning of where those points are. Just go in a jagged zigzag pattern and then curve and smooth each point into a bubble lump. I could probably make a quick video if you need it.

^^ though looking at the way i draw and shade the first chapter is gonna be really slowly updating XD , also do you have any tips on thought bubbles?
π: 0 β©: 1
DraconianRain In reply to Sukeiisu [2015-09-05 22:54:52 +0000 UTC]
Nothing wrong with that <3 The better stories take more timeΒ Β Um well I use to colour my thought bubbles a different colour and my readers were fine with it. As long as you define somewhere, even the description you can do or draw any shape but I recommend always using the lineart layer in Sai or some kind of bezier path tool. Have you ever used Krita? It's freeware and has a lot of great tools for creating this kind of thing. I hated making the classic fluffy cloud thought bubbles towards the end. I definitely recommend having thought bubbles an opposite contrasting colour and drawing as a regular speech bubble and narration or monologues in rectangles. You could also try doing a normal speech bubble and then instead of a line tail make them little circles.

Sukeiisu In reply to DraconianRain [2015-09-05 23:25:48 +0000 UTC]
actually i have used krita but i just couldn't get used to it XD . I dont know why but i generally prefer sai , i just recently discovered layer modes XD . Sometimes in manga though they use those spiked line speech bubbles for thoughts or something , so maybe that would be good.
Also yeah i use colours to show who's talking or something , because my comic may have alot of confusing text XD . Though i am planning of switching up artstyles depending on what character a chapter focuses on , so at one point theres gonna be alot of chibis XD

DraconianRain In reply to Sukeiisu [2015-09-05 23:55:32 +0000 UTC]
I couldn't at first but every since the newest releases I've found it a lot better to use lately. Ah yeah those are general either super shocking thoughts or screaming. I think you can find some premade on DA. A lot of people share their speech bubble resources. Maybe if you check them out it might give you some ideas on what to use also do you know about Sai's stabilizer option? That might really give you the help you need in drawing that kind of thing. I know it did for me.
Those spikey bubbles are usually emotional response type or atmospheric speech bubbles. If you want to make those you can do it how I suggested or freehand it with Sai's stabilizer set to the highest setting.
XD I use to do that too. Best I can recommend is to just test out everything and see what fits. Frustrating answer I know and I'm sorry T^T. If I hadn't lost my desktop PC when my house got smashed I'd make you a tutorial on different ways to make speech bubbles. I could perhaps make one in the near future though.

Sukeiisu In reply to DraconianRain [2015-09-06 08:31:49 +0000 UTC]
Yeah i use the stabilizer alot XD usually i have it at 15 or 3 . Idunno i guess i could maybe actually kind of look at the premade ones then , since usually they're pretty good i guess .
Hmmm yeah i guess they are emotional response or something , maybe i'll change it around during the creation of the comic though . Since thats why i also want to start a comic XD .
Would be great if you would make that tutorial! i'd appreciate it alot and im pretty sure alot of other people would too ^^
Thanks for these great answers by the way! helps alot ^^

I use to use it a lot. Not so much any more. It's such a great feature. Some of them are great but if anything it might give you some ideas on other ways you can do it. Sometimes it's good to browse through them just to get you thinking and who knows what ideas might come of it.
Some of them definitely are. That's the frustrating part about comics. Trying to display emotion in the speech bubbles as well as the characters actions and expressions. Also nothing wrong with that. I say just do it. Won't know until you try ^w^
It's definitely on my list.Β
I'm glad <3 Sometimes I worry that it's not helpful T^T Best of luck to you and I hope you will be able to work it all out <3

You either write them or use another program like Photoshop or Gimp or even MS Paint. Freeware like GIMP can make text with the same effects as Photoshop. Sai has no text tool anywhere. Sorry.
