Description Now for some personal works!

I've been meaning to draw up some treefolk for a while, and produced this one on the car ride up to Michigan. They're basically a plant that works like an animal.

You'll notice I used roman numerals to label certain things, so here's the descriptions that go with the numbers:

I. Treefolk do have "eyes", but they are very simple, comprised of only a pit of light-sensitive cells. This allows the creature to sense what direction the light is coming from, but not much else. To make up for their poor sense of sight, treefolk have a decent sense of smell and can sense vibrations through the ground with their roots.
II. Those green protrusions off its chest are tubers, and are used for the external storage of water, nutrients, and starch. There are several more under the surface, including a central tuber in the chest that stores hormones and other chemicals to govern the other cells, and acts as the "brain" of the creature by releasing them at the appropriate times.
III. Treefolk do not have muscles. Instead, they have long, bundled stems that are powered by turgor pressure. For those of you unfamiliar with turgor pressure, it's basically water pressure within cells that support the plant, for example, well-watered plants have a higher turgor pressure and stay up straight, wheras deyhdrated plants loose turgor pressure and wilt.
Treefolk control their limbs by allowing water to flow into certain stems within a bundle, thickening and contracting the stem much like a muscle. This process is rather slow, so Treefolk have a very delayed reaction time.
IV. Treefolk reproduce through flowers like most plants. Some species produce male and female flowers (i), and some produce hermaphroditic flowers with both stamen and stigma present. Flowers appear on the underside of the creature in the gaps between the wooden carapace. The flowers are pollinated by insects and the occasional bird. Fruit (ii and iii, with a cross section) forms from the flowers, and depending on the species, either drops and germinates on its own or is germinated from a water supply from the parent plant. Young (iv) are small and do not possess the wooded carapaces of the adults.
V. Roots are located on the underside of the front limbs. the digits on the front limbs can interlock to form a spade-like appendage, which is then thrust into the soil for water and nutrients. Occasionally treefolk will use their roots to gain nutrients from a carcass or even more rarely, will use their strong forelimbs to bring down a slow-moving animal for food.

Treefolk can get up to 15-20 feet tall, the young are about 8 inches, and the fruits are about the size of a large grapefruit.

Your concept work is amazing, I wish I had skill in concept doodels for things other than dragons. I love the H2O sac things, and the baby concept in the lower corner (or is that what they are?).

Very interesting mode of movement, if these creatures existed in our world you'd certainly be an expert. Your explanation is detailed, and well explained.

YAY treefolk

Are they sentient in that they have a moral alignment (eg. Good or evil)? Cool work. I like the proportion of arms to legs. It really creates a slow, heavy, lumbering impression, and its stance makes it looks slightly primitive. I suppose drawing iv. is the offspring/seedling. They look really cute.
And is that a bunch of grapes as a loincloth? XD

I didn't design them with sentience in mind, but I'd guess they'd be neutral or leaning toward the good side of things.

lol, No, it's not a loincloth, they're flowers...I thought that since flowers would eventually turn into fruits, which then turn into offspring, having them on the underside of the creature would give the little treefolk babies some protection against birds and squirrels. Kind of like some spiders and lobsters protect their eggs by carrying them under their body. It looks kinda weird, I know.

No, its smart and logical. You really have thought out every little detail .

I really like these guys Most plant-based creatures I see tend to look monotonous and really more like plants that have been trimmed into animal shapes. This has a much more organic and natural feel to it and I really dig it <3

These are so very cool! What about speech? What are the levels of intelligence?

They would so fit in my book, lol.

Thanks!

Well, they don't really have a brain designed to be capable of something other than simple responses to their environment, (i.e., "that hurts, get away from it" reactions) so I'm guessing they're not too smart. And they can't really hear, but rather sense vibrations, so speech would more be designed like Morse code with a single tone repeated in a specific pattern.

But that's just me being a little biology nerd. If you want to take a more fantastical route, these things could fit nicely in the role of an ancient, historical-knowledgy race. Kinda like the Ents in LOTR.

They could be used that way... but now that I think about this it's such a nice spin seeing 'humanoid'-like trees that aren't the stereotypical walking/talking intelligent tree beings. ^_^
