Description
Oh come on I can not be the only one who sees the problem with declaring checkmate hereNo matter how many times I look at the panels this only looks like a normal Check
There are two ways I can see out of this
1. move the king in practically any spot it can move
2. Roy's knight is standing in front of a rook. Move the rook, problem solved
Whoever did this was NOT thinking properly
Fullmetal Alchemist (c) Hiromu Arakawa
Tsk, tsk Arakawa-sama

Oh good so I'm not alone here, though this pales in comparison to the artistic license taken in Code Geass.

Its entirely possible she is thinking in terms of Shogi, not many people know the mechanical differences between the two games. It is also possible they are playing a few moves ahead in their minds, when I play chess with my friends we often will awknowledge the end of a game prematurely because we both see checkmate in X moves. Alot of variables could play into this, perhaps its you who are not thinking enough into it.

Look all I see is what's in front of me and in front of me I don't see a checkmate.

Lelouch would be ashamed of this.... No wait, no, if every milimeter of his body was multiplied by a million and then translated to shame, this would not be a fraction of how much Lelouch feels about this guy's fail

There may be a bishop or queen attacking the king and our view is obstructed...or it's just a terrible terrible fail

Major fanwank, but maybe Grumman was declaring it ahead of time because he knew he was going to win?
Or maybe it has nothing to do with the game, and everything to do with the story?
Or maybe it was deliberate symbolism of thinking you've won when you haven't?

In the rules of Check, you must eliminate the threat to your king. In Other words, you cannot move a piece unless it defuses the threat to the king. When there is no way for the king to get out of check, it's checkmate.

This poster is made of win. Intelligent, detail-noticing win.
Seriously though, I can see how it may not matter to a lot of reader, as many of them don't notice or care about this sort of detail. However, when you're actually drawing it, wouldn't you pay more attention to whether or not the pictures tell the same story as the words?

lol Maybe she just wasn't thinking clearly at the time?
What if she was emotionally compromised or something that caused her to skip over it? What if her cat died? T~T I really hope her cat didn't die!
I'll forgive her this time. Just as long as she pays more attention in the future for her other stories! XD

Code Geass did the EXACT SAME THING in episode one. TV Tropes considers it artistic license.

meaning what exactly?

Greatkingrat88 In reply to draconichero18 [2010-11-07 19:05:26 +0000 UTC]
Meaning that, while Lelouch's move in chess was made to establish him as the cool, suave chessmaster who was always one step ahead. The chess board might not have been correctly drawn, but that is where artistic license comes in- it's up to the artist how he portrays something, and details may not be that important compared to the desired effect... I am sure the same applies here too.

I still don't think I understand how you can declare checkmate though where there isn't a checkmate. I mean I looked at the whole board I don't see it.
Maybe I'm just critically analyzing something that doesn't need to be lol

THat's the artistic license. It's a small, unnecessary detail, while incorrect it doesn't take away from the value the pointof a check mate brings to the story here.

Meh, it's not that big of a deal, I mean, it's not like the entire story revolves around chess or chess-based themes, aside from Mustang nicknaming his troops after chess pieces, this is easily ignorable. Plus, chess is complicated enough as it is, you can't remember EVERY single detail of it. I know I don't.

Do you know where all the pieces are? From this poster I can't seem them all in those two panels, for all you know there might be some pieces in place that do indeed lead to a checkmate that are not in view in the panels. I'm surprised no one brought this up.
