A shot of Celestia training new Princess Twilight in some of the finer points of defense.Why do they have traditional swords in Equestria? I dunno. I suppose it can stab just as well when wielded with magic.
Ohhh, goodness was this long-coming. This was a very old commission, and when i did start it, I got a sketch and the start of coloring, and then it got set aside for wayyy too long, and then despite the fact that I thought it would only take a day or two, I've been fiddling with it for a couple of weeks now... I have GOT to get quicker at digital art. I think that since it's endlessly editable I want to keep fixing it forever, whereas it's much easier to say, "Yup, screw it, it's done!" when you're dealing with paint.
Nevertheless, I think I found a finishing point for this, and I hope y'all enjoy it.

Very nice picture. Celestia's braids make her look ready for action and Twilight's armor is cute. Twilight is particularly nice; her tension comes through in pose and expression.
The scene with the sword-fighting horse was my favorite part of Disney's movie "Tangled."

I like this, but I do have one suggestion

Have them wield the swords in their mouths, the blade pointed forward. There's actually precedent for that (MLP G1, "The Prince and the Ponies" serial).

That was considered, but the commissioner specifically asked for magically wielded swords. My guess? It's more of a magic lesson than a fencing lesson. It would look pretty cool as a more physical fight though, huh? ^__^

Maybe the idea is to get used to manipulating physical objects with more precision and dexterity? Nothing like sword-fighting for building some versatile reactions.
